LIVESTREAM Germany: Marburg Mercanaries @ Frankfurt Universe, July 10, 16:00 CET (4 pm, 10:00 am ET)

The Marburg Mercenaries (1-3) will travel to nearby Frankfurt to take on the Universe (0-3) in this GFL South matchup.

The Mercenaries are coming off a heart breaking 24-21 loss in Munich, while the Universe are returning to the field following a bye week.

After scoring zero points in their first two outings, Frankfurt’s offense managed to score three touchdowns in their last game. Receiver Brandon Butler Jr. is the teams premiere pass catcher. The former US Airmen has the speed to fly by defensive backs and make defenses pay. Spaniard Cristian Santos Insau was also able to find the end zone scoring two touchdowns. The speedy Spanish running back meshes well with French national team tailback Jason Bofunda.

In an encouraging move, head coach Mele Mosqueda has brought in quarterback Glenn Cuiellette. The 6’ 22 pound 26-year-old last played for the Dresden Monarchs in 2019 where he joined the Saxon football powerhouse late in the season. In seven games with the Monarchs, the former Tulane and Texas Southern (NCAA D1) passer threw for 1,456 yards and 17 touchdowns. Cuiellette’s accuracy and scrambling ability should improve this Frankfurt offense, as poor quarterback play has held them back.

The visiting Marburg Mercenaries looked primed for a win last week in Munich. However, the Mercenaries missed a chip shot field goal with  under a minute left setting them back to a 1-3 record. Marburg’s offense featured a steady dose of Marcus Cox. The 5’9″ 205 pound Georgia native has been the foundation of this offense. Cox’s strong running has opened up the play action passing game for Sonny Weishaupt to find tight end Philip Eichhorn and receiver Aaron Seward. Fans can expect German quarterback Weishaupt to play well today as he faces his former team.

Defensively, Marburg’s secondary held up against a potent Munich passing offense. Defensive backs Reuben de Ruyter and Marvin Hart look to cause turnovers and capitalize on a struggling Frankfurt offense adjusting to a brand new quarterback with limited practice.

Expect Marburg to play well this week as they aim to bounce back from a tough loss. Awaiting the Mercenaries is a well-rested Frankfurt team with a new quarterback looking to show that they still belong in Germany’s top league.
