The Kiel Baltic Hurricanes (3-8) close their German Football League regular season Saturday against the playoff-bound Hildesheim Invaders (7-3) at Kilia Stadium, with the Hurricanes looking to secure fifth place in the GFL North and finish their season with a win in front of their home crowd.

The matchup is also Kiel’s traditional White Out game, but there is still business to handle on the field. The Hurricanes are safely clear of the playdowns, while Hildesheim has already locked up a playoff berth and sits third in the division.

Kiel looks for a response

The Hurricanes come home after a rough 60-0 loss to the Potsdam Royals, but their first meeting with Hildesheim offers a much better indication of what they can do against the Invaders.

That game went down to the wire before Hildesheim escaped with a 23-20 victory. Quarterback PJ Settles helped Kiel attack through the air, with Till Nowaczyk and Klaas Sengstacke among the weapons who caused problems for the Invaders defense.

A victory Saturday guarantees Kiel fifth place. The Hurricanes can also finish fifth with a loss depending on what happens between the Berlin Rebels and Braunschweig Lions, along with Berlin’s remaining game against Hildesheim.

Invaders building toward playoffs

The Invaders arrive with momentum after shutting down the Berlin Rebels 26-2 last week.

Quarterback Nelson Hughes will again direct an offense that found ways to answer Kiel in the first meeting. Hughes connected with Lennart Stukenborg, while Philipp Dolezal and Paul Terjung also contributed important points as Hildesheim battled back in a game that remained tight throughout.

The difference eventually came from the defense, which produced a safety to give the Invaders the three-point victory.

That unit enters the rematch coming off another strong performance after holding Berlin to just two points.

First meeting sets the tone

There is little reason to expect Hildesheim to judge Kiel by last week’s score against Potsdam. The Hurricanes already showed the Invaders how difficult they can be to put away.

For Hildesheim, the trip to Kiel is an opportunity to carry another solid performance into the postseason while protecting third place in the GFL North.

For the Hurricanes, there is no postseason waiting. Saturday is their finale, and after an uneven season, they have one last chance to finish it by knocking off a playoff team that beat them by only three points the first time around.
