The Hildesheim Invaders (4-0) put their unbeaten record on the line Sunday when they host the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes (1-2) in a German Football League North Division matchup at Helios Homefield.
Fresh off a historic derby victory, Hildesheim sits atop the division standings and continues to establish itself as one of the league’s hottest teams. The Hurricanes, meanwhile, are looking to rebound after back-to-back losses against two of the strongest teams in the country and prove they remain a contender in the North.
Invaders setting the pace
The Invaders have been impressive from the opening kickoff of the season.
After victories over the Allgäu Comets, Regensburg Phoenix, and Düsseldorf Panthers, they added perhaps their biggest win yet last weekend, defeating the Braunschweig Lions 31-27 on the road. It was Hildesheim’s first victory in Braunschweig since 1989.
Quarterback Nelson Hughes has been at the center of the success. Through the first two games alone, he threw for 653 yards and seven touchdowns, while receiver Paul Terjung emerged as one of the most dangerous targets in the league with 12 catches for 322 yards and two touchdowns.
Last week, Hughes connected with Noah Bomba for a key fourth-quarter touchdown before Matti Probst added another score to help secure the derby victory.

Hurricanes facing another challenge
The Baltic Hurricanes opened the season with an impressive 24-17 road victory over the Braunschweig Lions, but the schedule has been unforgiving since then.
Losses to the Dresden Monarchs and defending champion Potsdam Royals dropped Kiel to 1-2, although both defeats came against teams expected to compete for championships.
Quarterback PJ Settles remains one of the most dangerous players in the league. His ability to create plays both through the air and on the ground gives the Hurricanes a chance against any opponent.
Strength against strength
One of the most intriguing matchups will be the Kiel offense against the Hildesheim defensive front.
Kyle Kitchens and Julian Thompson have helped anchor a defense that has consistently pressured opposing quarterbacks and limited big plays. Their ability to disrupt Settles could go a long way toward deciding the outcome.
