The Potsdam Royals (10-1) close out the German Football League regular season Saturday against the Munich Cowboys (6-5) at Potsdam’s Luftschiffhafen, with both teams already headed to the playoffs but carrying plenty of momentum into their final tune-up before the postseason.
The Royals have locked up second place in the GFL North, while Munich will finish fourth in the GFL South. That removes the pressure of the standings, but neither team will want to lose its rhythm with the quarterfinals looming.
Munich will attack through the air
The Cowboys arrive in Potsdam after beating the Straubing Spiders 30-23 and bring one of the league’s busiest passing attacks with them.
Quarterback Nicholas Semptimphelter has thrown for 3,100 yards and 30 touchdowns while completing 66 percent of his passes. Gabriel Boccella has been his primary target with 66 receptions, while Maximilian Mayer and Sebastian Reiner give Semptimphelter additional options downfield.
Mayer also leads the Cowboys on the ground with 413 yards on 85 carries. Still, Munich’s offense has clearly done most of its damage through the air, averaging 289.4 passing yards per game.
That makes Saturday a fascinating test for a Potsdam defense that has been nearly impossible to crack lately.

Royals defense keeps slamming the door
The Royals haven’t allowed a point in four straight games and will be chasing a fifth consecutive shutout against an offense averaging 26.2 points and 364.9 yards per game.
Potsdam has surrendered only 79 points all season while piling up 524 of its own. Its only loss came against the unbeaten Dresden Monarchs, and the defending champions have responded by putting together another dominant run.
The Cowboys can create problems defensively as well. Austin Spille leads Munich with six sacks, while the defense has produced 19 sacks and 11 forced fumbles.
Playoffs already on the horizon
With their quarterfinal positions settled, both teams face the familiar late-season balancing act: keep playing sharp football without unnecessarily wearing down key players.
For Potsdam, the chance to carry a remarkable defensive streak into the postseason provides its own motivation. For Munich, facing one of the league’s strongest teams gives the Cowboys a measuring stick before knockout football begins.
The standings won’t change Saturday, but with the playoffs next, neither side will treat this like an exhibition.
