LIVESTREAM Germany PPV: Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns @ Straubing Spiders, Aug. 1, 16:00 CET (4 pm, 10 am ET)

The Straubing Spiders (0-7) face their toughest remaining test of the German Football League regular season on Saturday when they host the unbeaten Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (9-0), who have already wrapped up the GFL South title and now turn their attention toward carrying momentum into the playoffs.

Unbeaten run continues

The Unicorns clinched first place in the GFL South with last week’s 58-6 victory over the Allgäu Comets, giving them a perfect 9-0 record with three regular-season games still to play.

Their dominance has been evident all season. Schwäbisch Hall has outscored opponents 401-151 while consistently finding ways to win with a balanced offense and disciplined defense. Even with the division title secured, head coach Felix Brenner has made it clear the remaining games are about maintaining the team’s rhythm and continuing to sharpen its form before the postseason begins.

The first meeting between these clubs was a one-sided affair, with the Unicorns posting a 66-21 victory at home in early May.

Building toward the playoffs

Although first place is already secure, there is still plenty for the Unicorns to accomplish over the final weeks of the regular season.

The coaching staff could use these games to gradually reintegrate injured players while ensuring the roster is healthy and prepared for the playoff run. Maintaining execution on both sides of the ball will remain a priority, especially against opponents eager to measure themselves against the South Division champions.

With every game serving as another opportunity to fine-tune the roster, Schwäbisch Hall will be looking for another complete performance.

Spiders searching for breakthrough

The Spiders remain in search of their first victory after opening the season 0-7, but the record doesn’t tell the entire story.

Since head coach Sven Dorfner took over and Daniel Emmanuel joined the staff as defensive coordinator, Straubing has shown signs of improvement. The offense has produced stretches of solid football, and the team has been more competitive despite the difficult results.

Playing at home in the Spider Dome should provide an added boost as the Spiders attempt to challenge one of the country’s premier programs.

To stay within striking distance, Straubing will need to limit mistakes, sustain drives, and capitalize on every scoring opportunity. Against an unbeaten Schwäbisch Hall team preparing for the playoffs, there will be little margin for error.

The Unicorns, meanwhile, know every remaining game is another step toward the postseason. Expect the South Division champions to approach this matchup with the same focus that has carried them to an unbeaten record through nine games.
