Host Italy made its presence felt on the opening day of the 2026 IFAF European Youth Flag Football Championships, going unbeaten in both U17 Boys and U15 Mixed play as 34 teams battled across three divisions Thursday at Spiaggia Romea Village in Lido delle Nazioni, Italy.
The Italians weren’t alone in putting together perfect starts. Spain, Israel and Finland also swept their U17 Boys groups, while Czechia and Great Britain emerged unbeaten from the opening day of U17 Girls competition.
Now the pressure starts to build. Friday brings elimination games in U17 Boys, the U15 Mixed quarterfinals and another important round of U17 Girls group play.
Italy sweeps U17 Boys group
Italy took care of business in Group C, beating Team Euro Youth 47-18 and Czechia 39-6 to finish 2-0 with a plus-62 point differential.
Spain was just as convincing, knocking off Great Britain 54-26 and Germany 56-19. Israel put up 120 points in two games, beating Serbia 65-12 and France 55-32.
Finland took a much tighter route to 2-0, escaping Poland 35-33 before beating Austria 48-33.
Those four group winners earned the inside track heading into Friday. The U17 Boys knockout round begins at 10:15 a.m. CET with Great Britain–Serbia, France–Germany, Team Euro Youth–Poland and Austria–Czechia, with the winners moving on to face Spain, Israel, Italy and Finland.
U17 Girls race still wide open
Defending champion Italy enters Friday at 1-1, while Czechia and Great Britain both carry 2-0 records into the second day.
Czechia produced one of Thursday’s most impressive results by beating Spain 35-6, while Italy rolled past Israel 34-7.
Friday’s 12:45 p.m. CET slate could shake up both groups. Italy faces unbeaten Czechia, Spain takes on France, Germany meets Finland and Austria squares off with unbeaten Great Britain.
Italy survives scare to reach quarterfinals
The host nation’s U15 Mixed team went 3-0, but its perfect opening day wasn’t without some late drama.
Italy blanked Serbia 39-0 and rolled past Poland 47-7 before surviving Ukraine 26-25. Germany, Austria and Spain also finished unbeaten atop their groups.
There were tight games everywhere. Spain edged Team Euro Youth 31-30, Czechia slipped past Great Britain 33-32 and Poland and Serbia finished deadlocked at 6-6.
Friday raises the stakes
The U15 Mixed tournament moves into the quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m. CET, with Germany facing Slovakia, Italy taking on Team Euro Youth, Austria meeting Czechia and Spain battling Ukraine.
For Italy, the road toward a championship now runs through a Team Euro Youth squad that scored 67 points in its two opening-day games. Spain–Ukraine offers another intriguing matchup after Spain survived its own one-point thriller Thursday and Ukraine came within a point of knocking off the hosts.
By the end of Friday, the championship picture will look considerably different. Thursday was about getting into position. Day 2 is where the race for Saturday’s European titles really begins.
