The Hope Flying Dutchmen (3-0) put their unbeaten start on the line Saturday when they host the Albion Britons (0-3) at Ray and Sue Smith Stadium in Holland, Michigan, as both teams open Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.

Hope rolling into conference play

The Flying Dutchmen have done just about everything asked of them through three non-conference games, beating Denison 28-14, UW-Stevens Point 38-10 and Hanover 27-10.

Hope enters conference play ranked No. 17 in Division III and No. 18 in the AFCA poll. The defense has been particularly stingy, going three straight games without allowing an offensive touchdown before the fourth quarter.

Against Hanover, Hope rushed for 261 yards while holding the Panthers to 63. Freshman Brody Schuiteman ran for 120 yards and three touchdowns and already has nine rushing scores this season.

Albion looking for breakthrough

Albion showed some signs of life in last week’s 38-24 loss to Rose-Hulman, jumping out to a 21-point first quarter.

The Britons defense registered five sacks, recovered three fumbles and produced 10 tackles for loss, giving Albion a possible blueprint for making life uncomfortable for the unbeaten Flying Dutchmen.

The recent series has belonged to Hope, including a 62-0 win last season and a 41-14 victory in 2024.

Dutch roots run deep

For European viewers, the setting provides another connection. Hope College was founded by settlers from the Netherlands in 1866, while its athletic teams have been known as the Dutchmen since the early 1900s.

Now the focus is on the MIAA race. Hope entered the season as the unanimous choice to win the conference, and Saturday’s home date with Albion is the first step toward turning that preseason expectation into a championship.
