LIVE STREAM: Kiel Baltic Hurricanes, Braunschweig New Yorker Lions Clash

German Football League Game of the Week: Kiel Baltic Hurricanes v. Braunschweig New Yorker Lions

In Germany today, the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes host defending German Bowl and current EuroBowl champion Braunschweig New Yorker Lions in Kiel.

The Hurricanes enter the game in fourth place in the German North standings with a 3-2 record while Braunschweig, after suffering a surprising defeat against the Berlin Rebels last week, are right in front of them in third.

Kiel boasts one of the top offenses in Germany averaging 448 yards per game. Quarterback Logan Schrader has thrown for 1,241 yards and 11 touchdowns so far in 2016. His favorite target is Xavier Mitchell who has 32 receptions for 443 yards and five touchdowns. Running back Christopher McClendon is second in rushing in the league with 509 yards rushing in four games.

However, as potent as the Hurricanes offense is, they will have to contend with the stingiest defense in Germany. The Lions give up an average of only 14.4 points per game.

A key stat in any football game is turnover ratio. Braunschweig is the best in Germany with a ratio of 1.40. In other words, they have forced 12 turnovers (fumbles, interceptions) in five games while giving up five for a +7 score.

Quarterback Questions

Quarterback Grant Enders, who may still be doubtful for this game, is the most efficient passer in Germany with a 76% completion percentage and rating of 200. If he can’t play, and backup Evan Landi can’t fill in, Christian Bollmann will no doubt again be called upon. He played well after getting comfortable last week against the Berlin Rebels and with another week’s practice could well surprise.

For the Lions, the running back tandem of David McCants and Chris Smith is averaging 195.4 yards per game and may problems Kiel. The Hurricanes, who allow 145 yards a game rushing, will have to find a way to keep them in check. Versatile receiver Jan Hilgenfeldt has been a welcome addition to Braunschweig this season. Not only is he among the top 10 receivers in Germany, he also leads Braunschweig in all purpose yardage while handling kickoff duties.

Both teams need this win.

Kickoff: 4 PM (10 AM EDT)
