Louisville Kings secure first win in franchise history, defeating Houston Gamblers in OT
In a thrilling overtime showdown, the Louisville Kings (1-3) flipped the script on their previous heartbreak, defeating the Houston Gamblers (1-3) 24-22. This historic victory marked the Kings’ first win in franchise history and showcased the excitement of the inaugural Thursday night game in the United Football League.
Kicking off the scoring
The game started with a bang as Tanner Brown nailed a 59-yard field goal to give the Kings an early lead. Houston quickly responded with John Hoyland matching him with a 50-yarder, setting the stage for a night filled with impressive kicking performances.
Louisville continued to build momentum when quarterback Jason Bean connected with Lucky Jackson for a 41-yard gain on third down. After a series of penalties, James Robinson punched in a touchdown on a 4th-and-goal, putting the Kings ahead 10-3. Brown added another field goal, extending the lead to 13-3 before halftime.
Gamblers rally in the second half
The Gamblers came out strong in the second half, with Marcus Yarns breaking free for a 68-yard touchdown on the first play, narrowing the gap to 13-12 after a missed PAT. Taulia Tagovailoa then led a smooth drive, capping it off with a six-yard rushing touchdown to give Houston a 19-16 lead.
However, the Kings weren’t done yet. Brown hit field goals from 52 and 48 yards in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 22 and making history as both kickers hit three 50+ yard field goals in the same game.
Overtime drama
In a tense finish, Houston seemed poised to win after Major Burns intercepted Bean, but Hoyland missed a 38-yard field goal, sending the game into overtime. In the second round of the shootout, Tre McKitty caught a crucial pass from Bean for a two-point conversion, sealing the victory for Louisville as the Kings’ defense held strong against Houston’s final attempt.
With this win, the Louisville Kings celebrate a historic moment, while the Houston Gamblers will look to regroup as they prepare for their next matchup.
