Germany: Munich Cowboys boost defense with signing of Joe Zanca
The Munich Cowboys have strengthened their defensive front for the 2026 German Football League season with the addition of versatile lineman Joe Zanca, a 5’11”, 250-pound force from Chicago who brings a blend of professional experience and proven production from both the United States and Europe.
College standout turned pro
A 2021 graduate of DePauw University (NCAA Division III), Zanca earned All-Conference honors and was named Defensive Player of the Year in the NCAC after a stellar career that included 137 tackles, 34 tackles for loss, and 14 sacks over 44 games. His combination of quickness, power, and high motor made him a disruptive presence along the defensive line.
Professional experience on both sides of the Atlantic
After college, Zanca spent the 2022 season in the Indoor Football League with teams like the Frisco Fighters and Green Bay Blizzard before heading to Europe in 2023. With the Marseille Blue Stars in France’s D1 Elite, he dominated as a nose guard, recording 48 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, and 2 forced fumbles en route to being named Foreign MVP.
Bringing tenacity and football IQ
Known for his violence and tenacity on the field, Zanca also brings coaching experience from his time at the University of Chicago in 2024. His understanding of the game and ability to play multiple positions—including fullback in a pinch—adds valuable depth and versatility to the Cowboys’ roster as they prepare for the upcoming GFL season.
