Nitra Knights shock Znojmo Knights with late touchdown to reach Tipsport Czech Bowl

The third-seeded Nitra Knights punched their ticket to the Tipsport Czech Bowl in dramatic fashion this past weekend, scoring in the final 73 seconds to edge the second-seeded Znojmo Knights 14-10 in a defensive Snapbacks League semifinal before 856 fans.

It looked like Znojmo had done enough after reclaiming the lead late in the fourth quarter, but Nitra answered with one final drive to cap one of the most exciting finishes of the postseason.

Defenses set the tone

Despite featuring two of the league’s most productive offenses, this semifinal quickly turned into a defensive battle.

Znojmo moved inside the 15-yard line on its opening possession behind Petr Plaček and Zachary DeNike, but the drive stalled. Oldřich Helebrant connected on a 28-yard field goal to give the home team a 3-0 lead.

Both defenses continued to control the game from there.

Naniel Kosin forced a fumble that Marek Barta recovered to halt another promising Znojmo drive, while Nitra came away empty after a blocked field-goal attempt. The visitors threatened again late in the half, reaching the red zone after completions to Pavol Horník, but the Knights defense held firm to preserve the 3-0 halftime score.

Game comes alive late

The offenses finally found some breathing room in the fourth quarter.

After Noah Helmi sparked the drive with a long run, he powered his way to the three-yard line before quarterback Desmond Prusia finished the possession himself with a five-yard touchdown run. Martin Pavlík’s extra point put Nitra ahead 7-3 with just over three minutes remaining.

The lead didn’t last long.

Denis Kadrle came up with a key reception to move Znojmo deep into Nitra territory, and moments later Plaček broke through four tackle attempts before racing 21 yards down the sideline for the go-ahead touchdown. Helebrant’s extra point gave the home team a 10-7 advantage with 1:46 left.

Bíro delivers the winner

There was still one twist left.

Prusia calmly directed Nitra into Znojmo territory before finding Mário Bíro, who had been largely contained all afternoon. This time the standout receiver broke free, hauling in a 44-yard touchdown with 1:13 remaining to put the visitors back on top, 14-10.

Znojmo had one last opportunity, but relentless pressure from Zdenek Nagy forced Volodymyr Hrynkiv into an incomplete pass on fourth down, ending the comeback bid.

With the victory, Nitra returns to the Tipsport Czech Bowl for the second time in three seasons, while Znojmo’s championship hopes ended one play short after an afternoon dominated by defense and decided in the closing moments.
