Mexico – ONEFA Week 3: Pumas CU stays perfect as defenses take center stage

Week 3 of ONEFA’s 14 Grandes Conference produced three very different types of games. Pumas CU maintained its perfect start and Borregos Ciudad de México pulled out a dramatic victory, while three matchups ended with wide scoring margins and two teams were held scoreless.

Pumas CU became the first team to reach three wins this season, Leones Anáhuac México picked up its second straight victory and Águilas Blancas kept rolling with another win. Burros Blancos and Linces UVM, meanwhile, slammed the door on their opponents with a pair of shutouts.

Auténticos Tigres and Borregos Monterrey had their bye weeks and remained undefeated.

Garza leads Pumas CU to third victory

Pumas CU maintained its perfect start by defeating Borregos Puebla 39-25 at Estadio Olímpico Universitario. UNAM improved to 3-0 behind another outstanding performance from Lenny Garza.

The quarterback threw four touchdown passes, increasing his season total to eight. His scoring completions covered five, 18, 22 and 34 yards. The final touchdown came with just over three minutes remaining and slammed the door on Puebla’s comeback hopes.

Pumas also scored two rushing touchdowns, on runs of two and three yards, to complete another productive offensive performance.

The UNAM defense did its part, intercepting three passes and recording three sacks to keep Puebla from matching Garza and the offense.

For Borregos Puebla, it was a second consecutive loss after opening the season with a convincing victory over Guadalajara. Puebla dropped to 1-2, with turnovers once again playing an important role in the outcome.

Week 4 brings one of the toughest tests of the season for Pumas, which visits Borregos Monterrey in a matchup between undefeated teams. Puebla, meanwhile, hosts Burros Blancos.

Leones Anáhuac México keeps rolling

Leones Anáhuac México took advantage of its third consecutive home game and defeated Borregos Guadalajara 28-17, improving to 2-1.

The final score didn’t fully reflect how competitive the game was. The teams were tied 7-7 before the Anáhuac quarterback broke the deadlock with a nine-yard touchdown run. The offense kept pushing from there, adding touchdown passes of 22 and 70 yards.

The defense delivered one of the game’s biggest swings, returning an interception 23 yards for a touchdown and forcing Guadalajara to chase the game.

Although Borregos Guadalajara held the lead at one point, it couldn’t repeat the late-game performance that carried it past Linces UVM one week earlier.

With two straight victories following its opening loss to Pumas CU, Leones remains among the best-positioned teams early in the season. It faces Borregos Ciudad de México next.

Ciudad de México survives seven lead changes

One of the weekend’s wildest games unfolded in Atizapán, where Borregos Ciudad de México outlasted Borregos CEM 27-24.

The lead changed hands seven times and neither team could grab control for long.

CEM went ahead 10-6 on a five-yard touchdown run, but Ciudad de México fired back with a 23-yard touchdown pass. The back-and-forth continued into the second half, when CEM returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to grab a 24-20 advantage.

Ciudad de México had one more answer.

Jorge Emilio González connected on a 12-yard touchdown pass, and the extra point gave the visitors a 27-24 lead. The defense took it from there, closing out CCM’s first victory after two losses.

CEM slipped to 1-2 after watching a winnable game swing away in the closing minutes.

Burros Blancos blanks Aztecas UDLAP

Burros Blancos delivered one of the weekend’s biggest surprises, shutting out Aztecas UDLAP 27-0 at Estadio Wilfrido Massieu.

The IPN team grabbed control in the opening quarter. A fourth-down conversion ended with Aldo Herrera’s first touchdown pass, and another short scoring throw quickly stretched the lead to 14-0.

Aztecas tried to answer through the running game and by attacking downfield, but turnovers, pressure and missed opportunities kept killing drives.

Burros Blancos added another touchdown before halftime for a 21-0 lead, then controlled field position and tacked on two field goals after the break.

The IPN defense never allowed UDLAP to find a rhythm, preserving the shutout even as the visitors were forced to take more chances.

Burros Blancos improved to 2-1, while Aztecas fell to 1-2. UDLAP hosts Leones Anáhuac Cancún in Week 4, while Burros Blancos visits Borregos Puebla.

Águilas Blancas punishes early mistakes

Águilas Blancas earned its second straight victory with a 45-7 rout of Leones Anáhuac Cancún.

Three first-quarter turnovers buried Cancún almost immediately, and IPN cashed in each opportunity to race out to a 21-0 lead.

Iker García briefly gave the visitors life by taking a kickoff 98 yards to the end zone, cutting the deficit to 21-7.

Águilas Blancas answered with 17 more points in the second quarter and carried a 38-7 lead into halftime. One final touchdown in the fourth completed the scoring.

Leones managed only 147 yards of offense — 106 through the air and 41 on the ground — while its defense surrendered 325.

Cancún dropped to 0-2, while Águilas Blancas improved to 2-1 after opening the season with a loss to Auténticos Tigres.

Linces UVM dominates from start to finish

After losing its first two games in the closing minutes, Linces UVM left no room for late-game drama this time, rolling past CETYS Universidad 38-0 at Estadio José Ortega Martínez.

UVM used both quarterbacks and found success through the air, with each throwing touchdown passes and spreading the ball among several receivers. Special teams also contributed to the scoring.

The biggest difference came on defense. Linces closed the running lanes, kept CETYS from sustaining drives and protected the shutout for all four quarters.

It was a sharp turnaround for a team that had lost 21-20 to Burros Blancos and 17-13 to Guadalajara, with chances to win both games late.

This time, UVM grabbed control and never gave it back, securing its first victory with its most complete performance of the opening three weeks.

CETYS, meanwhile, is still searching for its first 14 Grandes Conference victory.

Undefeated teams begin to separate

Week 3 delivered another clear message: turnovers are deciding games. Pumas grabbed three interceptions, Águilas Blancas turned three early takeaways into an insurmountable advantage, and the defenses of Burros Blancos and Linces UVM didn’t surrender a point.

After three rounds, Pumas CU leads the undefeated group at 3-0. Auténticos Tigres and Borregos Monterrey remain 2-0 after their first bye weeks.

Leones Anáhuac México, Águilas Blancas and Burros Blancos each have two victories, while several teams sit at 1-2.

Now comes a Week 4 matchup that should tell us plenty: undefeated Pumas CU heads to Monterrey to face undefeated Borregos Monterrey.

Three weeks have started to sort out the field. Week 4 gives two of the teams at the top their first chance to separate from it.
