Pforzheim Wilddogs Blank Regensburg Phoenix 31-0 in Season Opener
The Pforzheim Wilddogs (1-0) kicked off their German Football League season with a decisive 31-0 victory over the newly-promoted Regensburg Phoenix (0-1). This win marked a historic achievement for the Wilddogs, as they recorded their first shutout in the league, showcasing a dominant defensive effort throughout the game.
Bumpy start in Bavaria
The game began at the Weinweg Stadium, where the Wilddogs faced a challenging start. After winning the coin toss, they chose to receive the ball in the second half, allowing Regensburg to take the first offensive possession. The Phoenix made some progress but ultimately stalled, unable to convert their early opportunities. The Wilddogs defense demonstrated a “bend but don’t break” mentality, holding strong against the Phoenix offense.
Pforzheim struggled initially on offense, going “4 and out” on their first drive. However, the tide turned when quarterback Drequan Harris connected with Luca Hirschberger for a 35-yard touchdown, putting the Wilddogs up 7-0.
Drama before halftime
The second quarter was marked by missed opportunities and defensive highlights. Wilddogs linebacker Nick Olivier intercepted a pass, giving his team a chance to extend their lead. However, a field goal attempt sailed wide left, and the Phoenix defense held firm, forcing another turnover. Just before halftime, Regensburg benefited from penalties against the Wilddogs, but Konstantin Katz intercepted a pass, preserving the Wilddogs‘ 7-0 lead as both teams headed to the locker room.
Explosive third quarter brings the decision
The second half saw a complete turnaround for the Wilddogs. “After the break, it finally clicked,” said the coaching staff. Behind the running game of Dre Harris, the Wilddogs marched down the field, culminating in a touchdown catch by Leonell Fritzen, extending the lead to 14-0. The Phoenix struggled to respond, and Pforzheim quickly capitalized again with a touchdown pass to Raymond Fragosa, making it 21-0.
The Wilddogs continued their offensive onslaught, with Katz intercepting another pass and setting up a touchdown by Luca Faschian, bringing the score to 28-0. The Wilddogs scored an impressive 21 points in the third quarter, effectively sealing the game.
The price of victory and looking ahead
In the final quarter, Nick Olivier added to his impressive performance with a second interception, leading to a 40-yard field goal by Faschian, which capped the scoring at 31-0. Despite the shutout, the Phoenix showed flashes of potential, particularly through Nicolas Hayes, but were unable to find the end zone.
While the Wilddogs celebrated their victory, concerns arose with injuries to key players Luca Hirschberger and Chris van Munster. Head coach Michael Lang emphasized the need for improvement, stating, “There is a lot to work through. Of course, I’m happy with the win, but we have to improve.” The Wilddogs will look to build on this momentum as they prepare to host the Berlin Rebels in their home opener on May 16.
