In front of 7,654 enthusiastic fans, the Roughriders delivered a memorable performance, highlighted by a last-minute touchdown pass from rookie quarterback Brayden Schager to rookie receiver Daniel Wiebe.

A Strong Start for Both Teams

The game began with both teams showcasing their veteran talent. Winnipeg struck first, with quarterback Zach Collaros connecting with Tim White for a quick 57 yards before running back Brady Oliveira powered into the end zone from two yards out, putting the Bombers up 7-0. However, the Roughriders quickly responded. Quarterback Trevor Harris led a drive that culminated in a two-yard touchdown run by A.J. Ouellette, tying the game at 7-7.

As the first half progressed, both teams exchanged blows. After a pick-six by Winnipeg’s Evan Holm off backup quarterback Jack Coan, the Bombers extended their lead to 14-7. The Roughriders fought back with a 51-yard field goal from Johnathan Kim, narrowing the gap to 17-14 by halftime.

Second Half Drama Unfolds

The second half saw Coan lead the Roughriders on an impressive drive, capped off by a 12-yard touchdown pass to rookie Johnny Johnson III, giving Saskatchewan a 21-17 lead. However, the Bombers responded with a touchdown of their own, as Coan’s replacement, Taylor Elgersma, was intercepted by rookie James Burgess, allowing the Roughriders to regain possession.

As the game wore on, Schager entered the fray and quickly made an impact. Despite throwing two interceptions, he led a crucial drive late in the game, culminating in a 35-yard field goal by Kim to make it 27-24. With just under two minutes left, Schager orchestrated a game-winning drive, connecting with Wiebe for a three-yard touchdown pass that put the Roughriders ahead 31-27.

Defensive Stand Seals the Win

The Roughriders‘ defense stepped up in the final moments, with J.J. Weaver sacking Bombers quarterback Bryce Perkins and linebacker Vi Jones sealing the victory with a last-second interception. Head coach Corey Mace praised his team’s resilience, emphasizing the importance of all three phases of the game.

With this exciting win, the Roughriders head back to Regina for the final week of training camp before kicking off their regular season against the B.C. Lions on June 13. The Bombers, meanwhile, will look to regroup as they prepare for their next preseason matchup.
