Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns add quarterback Walter Kuhlenkamp for playoff run

The Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns have added another weapon for the stretch run, signing quarterback Walter Kuhlenkamp as the unbeaten German Football League powerhouse prepares for another postseason run.

The 24-year-old, 6-foot-5, 215-pound quarterback arrives with recent experience in both the Austrian Football League and GFL, giving Schwäbisch Hall a proven option behind center as the stakes begin to rise.

Fresh off a run with the Dragons

Kuhlenkamp spent the 2026 season with the Danube Dragons, helping the Austrian club finish the regular season 9-3 and advance to the Austrian Bowl.

His move to the Unicorns brings him back to a league he already knows well. Kuhlenkamp made his European debut with the Saarland Hurricanes in 2025 and quickly established himself as a dangerous dual-threat quarterback.

He threw for 2,334 yards and 24 touchdowns while adding 791 yards and 11 scores on the ground, accounting for 35 touchdowns during his first GFL season.

From California to Europe

Before making the move to Europe, Kuhlenkamp played at Claremont McKenna College in California from 2020 through 2025.

The Greensboro, North Carolina native finished his college career with 4,094 passing yards and 23 touchdowns while rushing for another 660 yards and five scores. He earned First Team All-Conference recognition along with several academic honors while studying economics and physics.

Unicorns add another option

Kuhlenkamp’s arrival gives the Unicorns considerable flexibility at quarterback heading into the most important part of the season.

Lars Heidrich is expected back after being sidelined by injury, while Julius Klenk has stepped in and kept the offense rolling in his absence. Adding Kuhlenkamp also gives Schwäbisch Hall the option of moving Klenk back to his regular wide receiver position.

Head coach Felix Brenner now has three quarterbacks he trusts as the postseason approaches.

“We are now in the great position of having three players who can play the position of QB according to our requirements,” Brenner said.

For a Schwäbisch Hall team with its sights firmly set on another championship run, Kuhlenkamp adds experience, mobility and another option at exactly the right time.
