Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns blank Kiel Baltic Hurricanes 42-0 to stay perfect

The Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (11-0) kept their perfect German Football League season rolling Saturday, shutting out the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes (2-7) 42-0 in front of 1,843 spectators at OPTIMA Sportpark.

The Unicorns were held scoreless in the opening quarter but took control with 21 points in the second and finished with another 21-point burst in the fourth. The defense did the rest, keeping Kiel off the scoreboard for the entire afternoon.

Klenk takes over after Heidrich injury

The biggest concern for Schwäbisch Hall came early when quarterback Lars Heidrich, returning from a lengthy injury absence, was forced out in the first quarter.

Julius Klenk stepped in and quickly settled the offense. His 65-yard touchdown pass to Rayjuon Pringle opened the scoring before Kelley Joiner broke loose for an 18-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0.

The Hurricanes appeared to have created a momentum shift when Malte Karlitschek intercepted Klenk late in the half. Instead, the Unicorns immediately took it back. Monteze Latimore intercepted PJ Settles and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown, sending Schwäbisch Hall into halftime ahead 21-0.

Defense slams the door

Kiel had its best opportunity immediately after halftime, driving deep into Unicorns territory. The Hurricanes came away empty, however, after being stopped on fourth down near the goal line.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, but Schwäbisch Hall broke the game open again in the fourth.

Klenk connected with Marvin Fuchs for a 20-yard touchdown before Mathis Harang raced 34 yards for another score. Klenk finished nine of 13 for 171 yards and two touchdowns.

Running game finishes it

The final touchdown produced one of the afternoon’s biggest plays.

Erik Häffner broke free for an 84-yard run before Daniel Kampmann caught him at the one and knocked the ball loose. Häffner recovered his own fumble in the end zone for the touchdown, and Timo Bronn’s sixth successful extra point completed the 42-0 win.

The Unicorns again showed their depth on the ground, with Joiner, Harang and Häffner all finding the end zone. The defense delivered its own statement by producing the shutout and turning Latimore’s interception into seven points.

For Schwäbisch Hall, the result was another convincing step toward the postseason. Already crowned GFL South champions, the Unicorns are now 11-0 with their unbeaten season still intact.

The Hurricanes, meanwhile, dropped to 2-7 and remain caught in the battle near the bottom of the GFL North.
