Seinäjoki Crocodiles rally past Tampere Saints to remain unbeaten in Maple League

The Seinäjoki Crocodiles improved to 3-0 in the Finnish Maple League Saturday, overcoming a sluggish first half and a determined effort from the Tampere Saints (0-4) to escape with a hard-fought 28-20 road victory at Pyynikki.

Despite entering the game as heavy favorites, the Crocodiles needed a strong second-half performance to erase a halftime deficit and preserve their perfect record.

Saints seize early momentum

The Saints could hardly have asked for a better start.

On the opening offensive play of the game, quarterback Christopher Howard connected with Logan Collier, who broke free for a long touchdown to give Tampere an early lead. Collier continued to be the centerpiece of the offense, adding a second touchdown later in the half while also producing one of the game’s biggest special teams plays with a spectacular kickoff return.

The Saints also came up with a blocked punt by Chase McCoy, helping build a surprising 20-14 halftime advantage.

Behind an improved offensive line that included new addition Lounis Benahmed, Howard had more time in the pocket than in previous weeks, allowing Tampere to challenge the Seinäjoki defense through the air.

Discipline becomes an issue

The Crocodiles looked rusty after a three-week layoff.

Penalties repeatedly stalled drives and extended possessions for the Saints, as Seinäjoki was flagged 13 times for 123 penalty yards. The lack of discipline prevented the visitors from finding any offensive rhythm during much of the opening half.

Still, the Crocodiles continued to battle behind Arttu Blomqvist, Maurico Porcha and Justus Virtanen, keeping themselves within striking distance despite the mistakes.

Defense fuels the comeback

The second half belonged to the Crocodiles.

Although the Saints defense limited Blomqvist to under 100 rushing yards for the first time this season, he still reached the end zone on a key scoring drive. Porcha also added a touchdown, while Virtanen finished with four receptions, two of them for touchdowns, as Seinäjoki gradually took control.

The defense also stepped up when it mattered most. Kevin Pointer led the way up front with 4.5 tackles, while Aatu Tuokko and Juho Kasari both intercepted passes to help halt any hopes of a Tampere comeback.

For the Saints, Collier once again carried the offense with two touchdowns, while Juho Angervo led the defense with 6.5 tackles and both Collier and Turo Kanerva recorded interceptions.

The final score secured another victory for the Crocodiles, but it also highlighted areas they will need to clean up moving forward, while the Saints were left encouraged by one of their strongest performances of the season despite remaining winless.
