Serbia: SBB Vukovi Belgrade sign former Texas RB Joe Bergeron

Serbia’s Vukovi Belgrade have landed one of Europe’s finest running backs in signing former University of Texas Longhorn Joe Bergeron for the 2019 season. The 6’1″, 232 lb native of Mesquite, Texas spent four seasons playing for Texas and Texas A&M Commerce racking up a total of 1,392 yards rushing and 25 touchdowns. Suiting up for the Dresden Monarchs (2016-2017) and Frankfurt Universe (2018) in the German Football League, he amassed 2,771 yards rushing and 30 touchdowns while catching 67 passes for 824 yards and another three touchdowns.

As a star high school running back at North Mesquite HS, Bergeron had an outstanding career, rushing for 2,724 yards and 30 touchdowns in his sophomore, junior and senior years. His North Mesquite head coach, Mike Robinson:

Joe’s a multi-dimensional back. We call him a triple threat. Not only can he run, he can catch ball out of backfield, he also can block. In the Texas system, he’ll play h-back, which allows him to do what he does best. He’s going to line up and run the ball, line up in slot, catch ball on play action passes. Then when they need that one yard, he can lead for the quarterback or the tailback. He’s an unselfish player, which is probably his best quality. He’s unselfish and talented.

Bergeron explained why he signed in Serbia with Vukovi:

“A former teammate of mine had previously played for Vukovi and he only had good things to say. It will be interesting to play in a new country, but I am also looking forward to the new contacts and team dominance in the league.”
