St. Louis Battlehawks in winner’s circle after lethal defensive performance in Derby Classic beating the Louisville Kings 16-3

The St. Louis Battlehawks (4-2) dominated the Louisville Kings (2-4) with a decisive 16-3 victory in the Kentucky Derby Classic, showcasing a formidable defensive performance that left the Kings struggling to find their rhythm. With six sacks and nine tackles for loss, the Battlehawks’ defense was relentless, allowing just 166 total yards and securing a clear-cut win.

Fast start for the Kings

The energy was electric at Lynn Family Stadium as the game kicked off, with the Kings striking first. Quarterback Chandler Rogers faced a crucial third-and-10 but delivered a perfect strike to Lucky Jackson, who sprinted for 25 yards. Tanner Brown then capped off the drive with a 40-yard field goal, putting Louisville ahead 3-0 early in the game.

However, the Battlehawks quickly regrouped after a turnover on their first drive. Despite a backward pass from their quarterback, the defense stepped up, with Cam Gill recovering the fumble. Louisville’s defense, fresh off a strong performance in their previous game, managed to force a punt, keeping the score close.

Battlehawks take control

After a quiet first quarter, the Battlehawks finally got on the board in the second quarter. Ramiz Ahmed, making his debut, drilled a 42-yard field goal to tie the game at 3-3. St. Louis then took the lead with a well-executed play, as quarterback Jake Frost connected with Blake Jackson for a 33-yard gain, followed by a touchdown pass to Gary Jennings, making it 9-3 at halftime.

The Kings struggled offensively, totaling just 105 yards in the first half, while St. Louis’s Pita Taumoepenu wreaked havoc with two sacks.

Second half dominance

The second half saw the Battlehawks continue their defensive onslaught, forcing Louisville into a third straight three-and-out. St. Louis began to pull away when Frost threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Steven McBride, extending the lead to 16-3.

As time wound down, the Kings attempted to rally but were thwarted by Nevelle Clark’s interception of Rogers, sealing the game for St. Louis. The Battlehawks held Louisville to a dismal 2-of-14 on third downs and 0-of-2 on fourth downs, showcasing their defensive prowess.

With Frost throwing for 242 yards and two touchdowns, and Jarveon Howard leading the rushing attack with 56 yards, the Battlehawks look poised for their upcoming matchup against the Columbus Aviators. Meanwhile, the Kings will need to regroup after a tough loss as they search for answers moving forward.
