Stockholm Mean Machines stun Örebro Black Knights with last-second touchdown to reach Swedish final

The Stockholm Mean Machines punched their ticket to the Swedish Superserien championship game Sunday, rallying for a dramatic 27-24 victory over the Örebro Black Knights at Östermalms IP on a touchdown pass with just eight seconds remaining.

Although Örebro earned home-field advantage by finishing second in the regular season, renovations at Behrn Arena forced the semifinal to be played in Stockholm, giving the Mean Machines the unusual opportunity to host what was officially Örebro’s home game. The victory sends Stockholm to the Swedish final on July 4 against the Tyresö Royal Crowns.

Chaotic opening sets the tone

The afternoon was anything but ordinary.

Kickoff was delayed by 30 minutes after thunderstorms and lightning swept through Stockholm, and the drama continued once the game finally got underway.

Anthony Ratliff-Williams put the Black Knights in front with a touchdown pass to Hjalmar Gertsson before Stockholm answered with a touchdown from quarterback Dawson Herl to tie the score.

The first quarter then came to a lengthy halt after Örebro offensive lineman Isac Nordström suffered a serious leg injury during a running play. Medical personnel attended to Nordström on the field before an ambulance transported him away, leaving both teams visibly shaken before play resumed.

Momentum swings throughout

The second quarter belonged largely to the defenses.

Philip Batista Gröndahl recovered a fumble deep in Örebro territory, and the Black Knights defense later forced a safety by bringing down Herl in his own end zone. Edward Anshelm and Martin Jäppinen also combined for a key sack as Örebro repeatedly disrupted the Mean Machines offense.

Still, Stockholm found a late touchdown before halftime to carry a 14-9 lead into the break.

Two field goals extended the advantage to 20-9 in the third quarter, but the Black Knights refused to go quietly.

Late rally falls just short

Anton Källvik ignited the comeback with an electrifying 80-yard touchdown run before Ratliff-Williams found Johannes Lindeus for the two-point conversion.

Moments later, Ratliff-Williams powered into the end zone himself, and after Rasmus Brolin’s extra point, Örebro had surged in front 24-20 with only minutes remaining.

But Herl delivered when it mattered most.

Guiding one final drive, he found Matthew Retzlaff in the corner of the end zone with eight seconds left for the game-winning touchdown. Örebro had one last play after the kickoff, but the final pass fell incomplete, ending a remarkable and emotional season for the Black Knights.

For Stockholm, the unforgettable comeback keeps its championship hopes alive and sends the Mean Machines to another shot at the Swedish title.
