Sweden: Carlstad Crusaders add former All American Blake Nelson for 2026 season

The Carlstad Crusaders have made a major defensive addition for the 2026 Swedish Superserien season, signing former First-Team All-American defensive lineman Blake Nelson out of retirement following a standout career in both college and European professional football.

A decorated career on both sides of the Atlantic
The 5-foot-11, 240-pound Centennial, Colorado native was a force at Colorado Mesa University (NCAA DII), where he finished his career ranked in the top three in school history in tackles (356) and sacks (25) while setting the program record with 55.5 tackles for loss. His accolades included four All-Conference selections, Conference Defensive Player of the Year, and First-Team All-American honors in 2017. After college, he continued his success in Europe, most notably helping the Vienna Vikings win the ELF championship in 2022 alongside current Crusaders players Niclas Johansson and Matthew Daltrey.

Reunited and ready to contribute
Crusaders Defensive Coordinator Tracey Gere called Nelson “an exciting addition” who “fits perfectly into what we want to do defensively,” highlighting his versatility and experience. Nelson cited the opportunity to reunite with former teammates and compete for a top organization as key factors in his decision to return after stepping away from the game following the 2023 season.

His proven ability to disrupt offenses both against the run and as a pass rusher adds immediate credibility and depth to a Carlstad defense aiming to maintain its dominance in the Superserien. Nelson’s winning pedigree and high motor make him a valuable piece as the Crusaders prepare for another title run.
