Sweden: Stockholm Mean Machines sign Team Sweden RB Kasper Wedberg

The 2023 Swedish Superserien rushing leader, Kasper Wedberg, has signed to play for the defending Swedish champions, the Stockholm Mean Machines.

Wedberg has spent the past four seasons (2020-2023) with the Örebro Black Knights, helping them capture the 2021 Swedish title, beating the Mean Machines in the title game. In 2023, Wedberg topped the league in rushing yardage rushing for 394 yards in six games.

He has been a key running back for the Swedish national team his entire career and played in both of Team Sweden’s matchups in 2023 against Finland (IFAF European Championship Semifinal) and Italy (IFAF European Championship Bronze Medal Game).

In 2020, he had signed to play for the then reigning German Football League champions, the Braunschweig New Yorker Lions but the GFL season was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic so he returned home to Sweden to play for Örebro.

He spent the 2019 season with French champions, the Thonon Black Panthers helping them win the French title. During the regular season, he had 116 carries for 675 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging almost six yards a carry. He was a key to the Black Panthers running game, which led the French league. In 2018,  he played for the Bron-Villeurbanne Falcons in the French top division.

The 5’8″, 195 pound 29-year-old native of Falun, Sweden, Wedberg helped Örebro reach the 2017 Swedish final rushing for 621 yards and 11 touchdowns in his third year in Sweden’s Super Series. He was named Sweden’s top running back and played for the Swedish national team in games against Finland and Great Britain. He originally came to the Black Knights from the Dalecarlia Rebels in 2015.

“After seven seasons with the Black Knights and moving from the city of Örebro, I decided to sign with the Stockholm Mean Machines for 2024 to have a change of scenery and to try a different organization. With Stockholm being the back-to-back reigning champions and scheduled to play international games with the CEFL (Central European Football League) I was interested to play with them and help them to not only continue being the best team in Sweden but also help them on their journey to be the best in Europe.”

The Mean Machines are the reigning Swedish champions and in addition to defending their title in 2024, they will be playing in the Central European Football League for the second straight year. They will face the British champions, the Manchester Titans in the first round on April 28.
