Switzerland: Calanda Broncos dominate Zurich Renegades in historic Obere Au Stadium opener
The undefeated Calanda Broncos (7-0) christened the new Obere Au Stadium in Chur with a resounding 67-0 victory over the winless Zurich Renegades (0-5) this past weekend, dominating their Swiss National League clash in front of 700 spectators during the venue’s historic opening.
Historic stadium debut marred by rout
The Broncos, reigning Swiss champions, wasted no time showcasing their firepower in the inaugural game at their new home. QB Robin Sennrich threw three first-quarter touchdowns—a 45-yard strike to Max Gray, an 18-yard dart to Fabio Stukator, and a 24-yard connection with Niklas Sass—to build a 22-0 lead. The Renegades, fielding a depleted roster, managed just 21 offensive plays and failed to cross midfield until the fourth quarter.
Broncos’ offensive onslaught spares no mercy
Sennrich’s early barrage set the tone, but the Broncos diversified their attack as the game progressed. Running backs Amel Adjovi (3 TDs) and Lluis Sague (1 TD) exploited gaping holes, while kicker Noah Bachofen added a 35-yard field goal. Defensively, Jan-Earl Beekhuis returned an interception 62 yards for a score, underscoring Zurich’s struggles. The Broncos waived extra-point attempts after the first quarter, yet still amassed 487 total yards.
Postseason priorities loom
With the NLA victory secured, Calanda shifts focus to the Central European Football League quarterfinals, hosting Serbia’s Kragujevac Wild Boars on May 10. For the Renegades, the loss extends a dismal season marked by roster instability and defensive breakdowns.
The Broncos’ depth and discipline position them as title favorites, while Zurich faces urgent questions about competitiveness. As Calanda eyes continental glory, the Renegades’ rebuild begins anew.
