Switzerland: Calanda Broncos sign well-traveled QB Josh Taylor for 2027 season
The Calanda Broncos have found the quarterback they believe can keep them among Europe’s elite, signing American Josh Taylor for the 2027 Swiss National League season.
Taylor arrives in Switzerland after three seasons, three countries and three playoff appearances in European football. He played for the Kuopio Steelers in Finland in 2024, the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns in Germany in 2025 and the Legnano Frogs in Italy this past season.
Now comes a fourth country — and perhaps his biggest challenge yet.
Broncos needed an answer
The Broncos, reigning Central European Football League champions, needed an experienced replacement after Robin Sennrich suffered a serious injury late in the 2026 season. The two-time Swiss champion and MVP of CEFL Bowl XX is expected to miss much of 2027.
According to Calanda, Taylor was their top choice to fill the void.
Taylor’s European résumé certainly explains the interest.
He began his overseas career with Kuopio, throwing for 1,493 yards and 17 touchdowns against only three interceptions in eight games despite missing the final four regular-season games through injury. He added 459 yards and nine touchdowns rushing as the Steelers reached the Maple League semifinals.
A year later, Taylor moved to the German Football League and threw for 2,620 yards and 24 touchdowns while rushing for another 349 yards and five scores, helping the Unicorns reach the playoffs.
Production started in Ohio
Taylor arrived in Europe following an outstanding career at Mount St. Joseph University in Ohio.
A four-year starter, the 6-foot, 200-pound quarterback finished with 7,781 passing yards and 95 touchdowns while adding 2,342 yards and 42 scores on the ground.
His final season was spectacular. Taylor threw a school-record 46 touchdown passes in 11 games, the most of any NCAA Division III quarterback in 2023, while accounting for nine more touchdowns rushing. He was named HCAC Offensive Player of the Year and became a semifinalist for the Gagliardi Trophy.
Fourth country, same objective
Taylor’s arrival gives Calanda considerably more than an emergency replacement.
He has proven he can adapt quickly to different leagues, teammates and offensive systems while continuing to win. He will also bring coaching experience to Chur, where the Broncos expect him to work with the promising young quarterbacks in their youth program.
After taking teams to the postseason in Finland, Germany and Italy, Taylor now heads to Switzerland with an even bigger target.
He isn’t being asked simply to replace Sennrich.
He’s being asked to keep the Broncos on top.
