Team Sweden Overwhelms Denmark In Nordic U19 Championships

Team Sweden took advantage of a tired Danish U19 national team who had lost to Finland the day before and pummeled Team Denmark 48-13 in the Nordic U19 Championships in Vantaa, Finland Friday.

Behind the power running of Casper Goransson and Vilinhton Tengroth, Sweden took a 34-6 halftime lead. Goransson rushed for 199 yards and two touchdowns while Tengroth added another 147 yards and a touchdown. Swedish quarterback Dennis Isberg was not called upon often completing just three of four passes for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Axel Alenius and Ludwig Andersson each caught touchdown passes.

Nicholas Kaplan caught both touchdown passes for Denmark.

After Sweden overwhelmed the Danes in the first half, the Danish defense seemed to dig in after the break, creating turnovers which halted the Swedish attack on crucial drives.

However, the Swedish defense kept the Danes in check after they began finding a second wind in the final two quarters.  Nevertheless, Team Sweden added two more touchdowns, both by Goransson, to cruise to victory.

Despite the win, Swedish head coach Andreas Ehrenreich was not completely satisfied:

“We made too many mistakes and gave Denmark the chance to get back into the game. We have to fix these issues before we face Finland Saturday.”

Lars Carlsen, head coach for Team Denmark:

“We played really well in relation to how short a time we had to recover from yesterday’s match (against Finland). In addition, we had injuries that contributed to the game, but Sweden was a tough opponent today.”

Sweden faces Finland Saturday in the game to determine the winner of the tournament.
