‘That dude’s a killer’: Calvin Johnson thinks Puka Nacua will break his NFL record
Back in 2012, legendary Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson set a new all-time record for receiving yards in a single season with an eye-popping 1,964 yards through the air. That record has stood for longer than a decade, but he does not think it’s going to last much longer.
During a recent interview, Johnson revealed that he thinks the record is going to be broken sooner rather than later, and he has a pick for who he thinks will be the one to break it: Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua.
‘Dude’s a Killer Out There’
“He’s still got Matthew [Stafford], so I think he’s got a shot,” Johnson, the former Lions star, told the Detroit Free Press at his fourth annual celebrity golf outing Monday. “If he stays healthy, that dude’s a killer out there.”
It would be a bit of a full-circle moment for Johnson, too, as Stafford was actually his quarterback when he set the record back in 2012, and he’d like to see it happen.
“That would be kind of dope,” Johnson told the Free Press. “I’d have to go to that game if he did that, cause I like Puka. He’s getting some crap out of his system that’s just a young guy, just learning, but I think he’s an awesome, dynamic receiver.”
Justin Jefferson Couldn’t Do It
Johnson is actually surprised that his record hasn’t fallen yet, as he believed that Minnesota Vikings star Justin Jefferson would be the one to break. However, it hasn’t happened, and Johnson blames the team’s quarterback situation.
“I thought he could have been one, but they messed up his quarterback situation when they brought in my man from Michigan [J.J. McCarthy] when they had [Sam] Darnold just win them 14 games,” he told the newspaper. “I hate seeing people get fired, but people get fired when stuff like that happens.
“[Jefferson has] got the talent. What year is he in? Like six or seven? I mean, he needs to do it soon. He needs to do it soon, probably.”
Regardless of who ultimately sets the record, it sounds like Johnson is fully expecting it to fall in the near future.
