UFL: Orlando Storm escape with 15-14 victory over Houston Gamblers

In a thrilling United Football League matchup, the Orlando Storm (6-2) narrowly defeated the Houston Gamblers (1-7) 15-14, marking their first win in three weeks. The game came down to the wire, with Houston attempting a 63-yard field goal in the final minute that fell short, allowing Orlando to escape with the victory.

Strong Start for Houston

The Gamblers set the tone early, forcing a three-and-out on Orlando’s first possession. With Hunter Dekkers back under center, Houston quickly moved the ball downfield, with Dekkers connecting on a 17-yard pass to Marcus Yarns and a 27-yard strike to Jalen Cropper. However, the Storm defense held firm, forcing a long field goal attempt that John Hoyland missed from 60 yards.

Orlando responded swiftly, taking advantage of excellent field position. On just their third play, quarterback Jack Plummer found Elijhah Badger for a 35-yard touchdown, giving the Storm a 7-0 lead.

Back-and-Forth Action

Houston quickly answered with a drive that ended in a short field goal by Hoyland, making it 7-3. However, disaster struck for the Gamblers in the second quarter when DJ James, playing his first game with Orlando, intercepted a sideline throw from Dekkers and returned it for a pick-six, extending the Storm‘s lead to 14-3.

The Gamblers responded immediately with a 50-yard kickoff return by Cropper, setting up a seven-yard touchdown scramble by Dekkers, cutting the deficit to 14-10. Orlando added a field goal from Michael Lantz, making it 17-10 at halftime.

Houston Takes the Lead

After a scoreless third quarter, Houston head coach Kevin Sumlin turned to John Rhys Plumlee, marking the fourth quarterback used this season. Plumlee made an immediate impact, connecting with Jalen White for a 49-yard touchdown, giving the Gamblers their first lead at 20-17.

Orlando needed a response, and Plummer delivered, hitting Badger for a 30-yard touchdown to reclaim the lead at 24-20.

Final Moments

Houston fought back with a 64-yard return by Lawrence Keys, setting up a 31-yard field goal by Hoyland to narrow the gap to one point. With two minutes left, the Gamblers forced a punt, giving them one last chance to win.

After a defensive holding penalty extended their drive, Houston had a chance to win with a 63-yard field goal attempt. Unfortunately, Hoyland’s kick came up short, sealing the victory for the Storm.

Badger was the standout performer for Orlando, finishing with four receptions for 75 yards and two touchdowns. Despite racking up 415 total yards, the Gamblers struggled in the red zone, going just one-for-five, which ultimately decided the game. The Storm will look to build on this momentum as they prepare to face Houston again at Fort Hood’s Phantom Warrior Stadium next week.
