The St. Louis Battlehawks (6-3) clinched a playoff berth with a 24-15 victory over the Houston Gamblers (3-6) at home, showcasing a dominant defensive performance that ultimately eliminated the Gamblers from postseason contention. Under first-year head coach Ricky Proehl, the Battlehawks proved they are a force to be reckoned with as they head into the playoffs.
Gamblers strike first
The Gamblers came out strong, determined to make a statement in their regular-season home finale. After forcing the Battlehawks to turn the ball over on downs, quarterback Hunter Dekkers quickly capitalized on the opportunity. Following a defensive pass interference penalty, Dekkers connected with Jalen Cropper for a 27-yard gain. Just two plays later, he found former Louisville King JaVonta Payton in the end zone for a touchdown, giving Houston an early 6-0 lead after a missed conversion attempt.
The Battlehawks had a chance to respond but were thwarted by a missed 43-yard field goal from Ramiz Ahmed after a promising ten-play drive. The Gamblers then turned to their run game, with Marcus Yarns breaking free for a 42-yard run into the red zone. Although the drive stalled, John Hoyland added a short field goal, extending Houston’s lead to 9-0.
Turning point before halftime
St. Louis finally got on the board with a 36-yard field goal from Ahmed, but the Gamblers maintained their momentum with a crucial turnover. Jahcour Pearson had a 22-yard gain before Eli Walker forced a fumble, recovered by Kary Vincent. However, the Battlehawks defense responded with a quick stop, allowing Manny Perez to take over at quarterback.
With just 26 seconds left in the half, the Battlehawks orchestrated a remarkable scoring drive. After a couple of quick completions, Jarveon Howard ripped off a 21-yard run, setting up a touchdown pass from Perez to Hakeem Butler. This impressive play gave St. Louis a surprising 10-9 lead at halftime.
Battlehawks take control
The second half began with Houston looking to regain momentum. John Rhys Plumlee connected with Yarns for a 17-yard gain, followed by a 44-yard strike to Cropper. Kirk Merritt then scored a touchdown, putting the Gamblers ahead 15-10 after a failed two-point conversion.
However, the Battlehawks quickly responded. They regained control of the game with a touchdown from Jarveon Howard, followed by another score from Hakeem Butler. The Battlehawks defense held strong, ensuring their playoff spot with a final score of 24-15.
