UFL Training Camp Moves: Key Signings and Surprising Cuts Shake Up Rosters
As United Football League training camps heat up, teams are actively shaping their rosters through a flurry of signings and releases, aiming to solidify their lineups before the regular season kicks off. From veteran returns to promising new faces, here’s a breakdown of the latest transactions making waves around the league.
Stallions bring back proven talent
The Birmingham Stallions made a major splash by re-signing guard Zack Johnson, a 2024 All-UFL selection who spent the past two seasons in the NFL with the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, and San Francisco 49ers. Johnson’s return provides critical offensive line depth following the retirement of Steven Gonzalez and adds experienced protection for quarterback A.J. McCarron. His familiarity with Birmingham’s system should help him contend for a starting role immediately.
Gamblers revamp backfield
The Houston Gamblers made a notable shift at running back, releasing veteran Nate McCrary—who rushed for 507 yards with the Michigan Panthers last season—and signing rookie Jalen White out of Georgia Southern, where he set school records with 3,016 rushing yards and 36 touchdowns. A two-time Third-Team All-Sun Belt selection, White brings a physical, downhill running style that could complement Houston’s offensive scheme.
Storm boost offense and defense
The Orlando Storm strengthened their roster by re-signing 2024 All-UFL running back Jashaun Corbin, who led the league last season with 514 rushing yards. Corbin’s return adds explosive playmaking ability to the backfield. On defense, Orlando signed tackle T.J. Smith, an NFL veteran who previously recorded 11 tackles with the Minnesota Vikings. Smith’s experience and interior presence should bolster the Storm’s defensive front.
Notable departures
The league also saw two roster exits this week. Defensive end Lorenzo Mauldin IV, a former CFL Defensive Player of the Year, announced his retirement after a standout career. Additionally, the St. Louis Battlehawks released linebacker Daniel Morrison, a small-school prospect from Wingate University, as they continue to refine their defensive depth.
These moves reflect the ongoing evaluation process as UFL teams balance experience, potential, and fit ahead of final roster cuts. With more transactions expected in the coming days, camp competition remains fierce across all eight franchises.
The UFL regular season kicks off March 27 when the Louisville Kings host the Birmingham Stallions.
