Vysočina Gladiators shut down Nitra Knights to repeat as Czech Bowl champions

The Vysočina Gladiators capped another outstanding season by defeating the Nitra Knights 32-6 in Czech Bowl XXXIII, using a suffocating defensive effort and a relentless rushing attack to successfully defend their title. The victory gives the Gladiators their fourth championship in club history after holding the Knights scoreless until the game’s final minute.

Defense takes control early

The final score hardly reflected how competitive the opening minutes were.

Nitra opened the championship game with an impressive seven-minute drive, methodically moving deep into Gladiators territory. But when the Knights failed to convert on fourth down near the goal line, the momentum shifted for good.

The Gladiators wasted little time taking advantage.

Vít Bezecný efficiently marched the offense down the field, mixing short completions with the running of Ashton Heard and Jan Dunovský before Heard broke free for a 30-yard touchdown. Jan Leština added the two-point conversion to give Vysočina an early 8-0 lead.

The defense delivered another huge play on Nitra’s next possession. After the Knights had driven inside the five-yard line, Michal Reng dropped Desmond Prusia for a crushing 28-yard sack, forcing another empty possession.

 

Ground game keeps rolling

With the defense setting the tone, the Gladiators leaned on their running game.

Bezecný connected with Petr Čermák for 30 yards before Heard and Dunovský continued pounding away between the tackles. Then Šimon Krahula provided the game’s biggest highlight, shedding multiple defenders weaving his way to the end zone from 45 yards out to extend the lead to 15-0.

Before halftime, Adam Pařízek came up with an interception of Desmond Prusia to preserve the shutout and send the Gladiators into the locker room firmly in control.

The defense wasn’t finished.

Petr Kratochvíl recovered a Prusia fumble early in the second half, and although the offense came away empty after an unsuccessful fourth-down gamble, the Knights continued to struggle against a defense that refused to give them anything downfield.

Championship finished in style

Bezecný helped put the game away late in the third quarter, finding Leština for 26 yards before finishing the drive himself with a seven-yard touchdown run early in the fourth to make it 23-0.

Backup quarterback Jakub Mallát later added a nine-yard rushing touchdown as Vysočina continued to dominate on the ground.

The Knights finally broke through with only 51 seconds remaining when Prusia connected with Mário Bíro for a 47-yard touchdown. But even then, the Gladiators had the final word. A botched conversion attempt ended with Kevin Sherman returning the loose ball the length of the field for two defensive points to complete the 32-6 victory.

Heard was named the game’s MVP after rushing for 77 yards and a touchdown while adding four catches for 61 yards. Behind 226 rushing yards, an efficient 11-for-13 passing performance from Bezecný for 148 yards, and a dominant defensive showing, the Gladiators left no doubt they remain the team to beat in the Czech league.
