Spain: Mallorca Voltors set to host Zaragoza Hurricanes; 3 games postponed

The Spanish League of American Football, LNFA, watched as first the snow and then the pandemic halted three of four games scheduled for this weekend.

A heavy snowfall hit the Madrid area of Spain late last week and although the snow is now melting, two of the home teams this week – Osos Rivas and the Las Rozas Black Demons – have been unable to practice so the decision was made to postpone the two games until a later date.

Osos Rivas was scheduled to host the Fuengirola Potros while the Black Demons were set to play host to the Gijon Mariners.

The third game between the home team Badalona Dracs and the Murcia Cobras was also postponed due to travel concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The fourth game of the weekend between the home team Mallorca Voltors and the Zaragoza Hurricanes will be played Sunday, January 17 at 12 noon.

Zaragoza Hurricanes (0-1) @ Mallorca Voltors (1-0), Sunday, January 17

The Hurricanes are coming off a lopsided 51-8 loss to the Badalona Dracs while Mallorca earned a solid 33-7 win over the Murcia Cobras to start the season.

These two teams met twice in 2019 with the Voltors winning both, 14-7 and 45-8.

Mallorca looks to be even more improved over last year’s squad with the addition of quarterback Tanner Young and receiver Jaylon Hibbs, who for the third time, are playing on the same team. They started as a deadly combination for Centre College and took their combined talents to Australia’s UNSW Raiders in 2019. Now they continue their saga with Mallorca. In the season opener, Hibbs caught seven passes for 94 yards and a touchdown while Young tossed three touchdown passes in total the other two to Juan Carlos Castilla and Javier Alberola. Running back Christian “Piti” Mir scored two rushing touchdowns as the Voltors took a 26-0 first half lead.

The Voltors have also bolstered their defense with the addition of all star linebacker Kadel King, fresh from winning the Finnish championship with the Kuopio Steelers.

Zaragoza enters this game with running back Denzel Duchenne hopefully healthy again and possibly also a new quarterback. With Andrew Vital who scored the Hurricanes lone touchdown against Badalona, still in the lineup Zaragoza could surprise.
