College football wrapup from Mexico, ONEFA and CONADEIP in full swing

The third week of college football in Mexico offered plenty of excitement and huge crowds. While a total of five games were postponed due to the earthquakes which hit parts of Mexico, most of the scheduled games were played.

ONEFA

Lobos UAC 16 – UNAM Pumas Acatlan 6

The action began in the ONEFA – Organización Nacional Estudiantil de Futbol Americano (National Student Organization of American Football) – league on Friday afternoon, when the Pumas of the UNAM campus Acatlán welcomed an old acquaintance, the Lobos UAC, who defeated the Pumas 16-6  in the stadium of the Faculty of Superior Studies Acatlán.

The Lobos took advantage of the mistakes made by the Pumas Acatlán ; 7 lost turnovers by the Pumas including an last minute interception. The Pumas now have a record of 1-2 while the Lobos are contenders to repeat as champions and they are are at 2-1.

Pumas UNAM 22 – Tigres UANL 19

On the same day, the bigest game of the day, pitted the current champions of the ONEFA,  Tigres UANL at home in Monterrey against the the Pumas UNAM, Supported by the work of the defensive unit, and quarterback Daniel Dejuambelz and the ‘extraordinary’ play of rookie Diego Pareyón, the Pumas CU achieved this Friday night a very important victory,beating the Autenticos Tigres 22-19.

The key play of the game for the UNAM squad was generated by linebacker Diego Pareyon, who ripped the ball from the arms of Tigres quarterback Max Villarreal on the goal line preventing a game-winning touchdown  and sending the game into overtime, where Pumas QB Dejuanbeltz in a read option was left with the ball to run it in and score in overtime. The Pumas now lead the standings with a record of 2-1.

Leones UAMN 34 – Linces UVM 20

In another duel of the strong conference (green) of ONEFA, The UAMN Leones surprised the Linces, taking a 21-0 in the first six minutes of the game and then holding on for the win.  great surprise took the Linces UVM to be defeated by the Leones of the Universidad Anáhuac Norte, who in the first 6 minutes of game already passed 21 -0 to the Linces, they wanted to react in the second half, but again the defense of the Two fourth quarter interceptions by the Leones were crucial  for preserving the win.

Burros Blancos IPN 34 – Aguilas Blancas IPN 28

In another game in the ONEFA’s strongest group, the Burros Blancos IPN from the Campus Zacatenco hosted the Aguilas Blancas IPN from the Santo Tomas Campus, and it turned out to be a true polytechnic and football festival, where 15 000 fans turned out to witness a great game with the Burros coming out on top 34-28. The Aguilas had a chance to tie the game with two minutes left but a  pass finished in a fumble them off as they suffered their first defeat of the year.

In another surprise, in the White conference, the Frailes of the University of Tepeyac win at home to the Anahuac University campus Querétaro 18-6. In the same conference, another great duel took place in Cancún when the other Anahuac Campus defeated the Toros Salvajes UACh 26-21.

In the Red Conference, the smaller school conference,  a classic was played in the city of Guadalajara, when newcomers the Leones UdeG hosted the Tecolotes of the UAG, in a game that should have been closer. The Tecos easily defeated the Leones 49 -10. The other results of the conference were Correcaminos UAT Reynosa 27-7 winners over the Lobos BUAP and the Correcaminos UAT but of campus Victoria defeated the Tlahuicas de Morelos 41-0. To finish the day, the UV Hawks faced the military squadron of the CGP Sentinels, defeating them 19-7.

CONADEIP

In CONADEIP, Comisión Nacional Deportiva Estudiantil de Instituciones Privadas, A.C. (private university league), also featured great games starting on Friday night. The  CETYS Mexicali Foxes beat the Bears CETYS Tijuana 32-0 within the group “Libertad”. In the same group, the Cimarrones UABC defeated the Coyotes UTH 16-0 in a defensive duel.

Aztecas UDLA 28 – Borregos Salvajes ITESM Toluca 0

On Saturday, in the Temple of Pain, the Aztecas of the UDLAP (2-0), played host to the Borregos Toluca (2-1) in a meeting where the Aztecas dominated at first end the encounter where in the first half they took a 15-0 lead at halftime and in the second half, when a response from the Borregos was expected, it simply never came and the Aztecas scored two more touchdowns to win 28-0 and remain first in the Independence Group.

Borregos Salvajes ITESM vs Potros ITSON

A huge celebration accompanied the opening of the new El Tecnológico de Monterrey stadium in QuerétaroEstadio Borregos with seating for 13 000 people, artificial turf, eight-lane tartan track, soccer and football, locker rooms, and gym is a beautiful new facility.

It was a game filled with excitement tied to the opening of the new stadium of Querétaro, and it did not disappoint the fans in attendance that crowded the stage taking 22 points to 7 at half time, so that in the second half they were involved in a defensive battle with the Colts, who only got 3 points, but were not enough, and thus the woolly were imposed by a score of 22 points to 10.

Borregos ITESM Puebla 24 – Borregos ITESM Guadalajara 17

With a stadium filled to near capacity, Los Borregos Guadalajara hosted the Borregos Puebla, where the fans of Guadalajara enjoyed a match full of emotions for all four quarters.

In this great example of American football, the team that made the fewest mistakes would win and it took until late in the game for Puebla could steal victory by scoring the final touchdown to win 24-17.

Borregos ITESM Monterrey 21 – Borregos ITESM Mexico 8

The final game at the Queretaro stadium ,the Borregos Mexico (1-2) hosted the Borregos Monterrey (2-1) in an emotional encounter.Monterrey took an early lead and led 14-2 at halftime. The Monterrey defense continued to play well in the third quarter but Mexico finally was able to find the end zone late in the game to make the final score 21-8 for Monterrey.
