ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller charged with misdemeanor from car crash that caused arm amputation

ESPN NFL draft analyst Matt Miller, currently on leave following a car crash and a litany of allegations over bogus charity leagues, has been charged with a misdemeanor stemming from his crash.

According to a court filing in Jasper County, Missouri, Miller faces a charge of failure to drive on the right half of the roadway when the roadway was of sufficient width, resulting in the accident.

The charge is the latest consequence to emerge from Miller’s crash, which occurred June 17. According to his family’s GoFundMe, the crash left Miller with “a compound fracture of his left femur, a shattered left kneecap and multiple broken ribs.” Doctors reportedly saved his life by performing an emergency amputation of his left arm.

Per The Athletic, he expects his recovery to take between 12 and 18 months.

News of the crash was initially met with horror and donations, but then the story took a turn when dozens people on social media claimed Miller had ripped them off over supposed charity leagues.

The alleged scheme reportedly consisted of Miller advertising leagues in which half of the money would go to charity and the other half would go to the winners. However, multiple participants reported to Awful Announcing that Miller’s responsiveness was limited at best and winners did not receive their payouts, with some only receiving payment upon threatening to go to the media.

There were also stories of people purchasing scouting lessons from Miller, again with proceeds supposedly going to charity, and not getting what they paid for.

The ensuing backlash led to Miller’s GoFundMe pausing donations (after raising $51,147) and the Missouri attorney general opening an investigation into Miller. Miller later announced he was stepping away indefinitely, but also phrased it as if ESPN had placed him on leave.

Those allegations are separate from Miller’s crash, which involved Miller’s Ford Bronco and a semi truck. Dash cam footage from the truck reportedly shows Miller’s car suddenly veering into the opposite lane and violently striking the truck, ejecting Miller despite his seat belt. The truck driver was not injured.

An initial hearing for the misdemeanor charge is reportedly scheduled for Sept. 21 in Jasper County Circuit Court.
