Olympic dreams on the line as world’s best descend on Düsseldorf
The time has come. The wait is over.
A total of 32 teams will battle for glory at the IFAF Flag Football World Championships at the custom-built Düsseldorf-Garath Flag Football Complex in Germany with more than 20,000 spectators expected to attend and 200 accredited media from around the world.
This is the first official Olympic qualifying event in flag football, where athletes will earn qualification for the Games and take the first decisive steps on the road to Los Angeles. The two best finishers in the men’s and women’s tournaments – outside of the United States who pre-qualified as hosts – will stamp golden tickets to LA28.
“Across the world, National Olympic Committees and governments are investing in flag football as nations prepare for LA28,” said IFAF President Pierre Trochet. “New high-performance programmes have emerged across every continent, creating an increasingly dynamic international landscape where established powers are being challenged by rapidly improving nations. Predicting the outcome has never been more difficult.”
World’s best descend on Düsseldorf
In the women’s competition, defending champion the United States opens the tournament at 8am on Thursday against Australia, while world number one and winner of both The World Games and the IFAF Americas in 2025, faces host Germany at 9.15am.
The men’s games begin when Germany takes on third-ranked Mexico at 10.30am and the United States will begin its quest for a sixth straight title against Israel at 1pm.
An elevated fan and athlete experience will feature innovations in sports presentation including music integration and an immersive festival-style experience for spectators, mixing sport and entertainment.

The IFAF World Flag 2026 trophy presentation will be a memorable moment in flag football history this summer in Düsseldorf as the men’s and women’s victors will become the first athletes to lift the iconic new IFAF World Flag Trophy.
Nike partnership takes center stage
IFAF has agreed a multi-year partnership with Nike that will see the brand play a leading role in driving the global growth, culture and performance of flag football through the Olympic cycle to the LA28 Summer Games. Under the agreement, Nike becomes the exclusive Performance Apparel Partner of IFAF Flag Football, responsible for kitting out staff and International Technical Officials at major flag football events over the next two years.
A series of Nike Flag activations will form part of the on-site fan engagement programme in Düsseldorf, while Nike will also act as presenting partner of the two prestigious tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards.

Group Previews – Women’s Tournament
Group A
World number one Mexico is the team to beat in Group A at IFAF World Flag 2026 with three European nations all looking to create an upset, including host Germany.

Group B
Defending world champion the United States is paired with European contender Spain and Oceania continental champion Australia in Group B. Nigeria withdrew from IFAF World Flag 26 due the inability of the travelling delegation to secure the necessary visas in time for the Championships. USA, Spain and Australia will each be awarded a win as a result.

Group C
Double IFAF European champion Great Britain is pooled with an Austrian team they beat in overtime last year and that finished fourth at the worlds in 2024. France has pushed both nations close in recent continental championships and China burst onto the flag football scene with a promising showing at The World Games and a gold medal grab at the 2025 Asia-Oceania tournament.

Group D
The route to glory will not be an easy one for anyone in group D, which features three teams from the Americas. Japan won bronze at the last IFAF world championships, Canada was unlucky to take home only the silver medal from the 2025 IFAF Americas, a tournament where Panama finished in third place. Brazil is determined to take a step up from being the fifth-ranked team from the Americas continent to challenge the favorites.

Group Previews – Men’s Tournament
Group A
Despite having competed on the world stage since 2008, defending champion the United States’ opponents in Düsseldorf are relatively unknown quantities. The Americans will meet two teams from Oceania – Australia and America Samoa – for the first time in IFAF competition, although the Aussies have lined up on the opposite side in friendly competitions. A more familiar opponent, European qualifier and traditionally high-scoring Israel, completes the group.

Group B
Group B includes three-time world champion Austria, a Canada team looking to medal for the first time since their predecessors won it all in 2008, and a nation that has only contested a medal once in 11 years of competition history in Japan.

Group C
Group C provides an intriguing rematch between Mexico and Switzerland after the European nation was the surprise package of the 2024 IFAF world championships and beat the 2021 silver medalists 41-35 to clinch the bronze medal in Finland. Germany will have high hopes of progressing to the knockout stages as the host nation, while Brazil looks to turn the tables on teams that have beaten them the last time they met in competition.

Group D features the fourth and fifth-ranked nations in the world in Italy and France and a third European threat in Great Britain and they are joined by Panama, the 2021 bronze medalists.
