Spain routs Great Britain Development Team 59–0 in IFAF European Championship opener

Spain made a spectacular return to the IFAF Men’s European Championship Level 2 competition, crushing the host Great Britain Development Team 59–0 at Nick Newbold Stadium in Coventry, England.

Quarterback Iván López Sastre threw six touchdown passes as the Spanish offense dominated from the opening possession, building a commanding 35–0 halftime lead.

Spanish passing attack overwhelms British defense

López and fellow quarterback Pol Singleton Planas, who added two touchdown passes, repeatedly exploited the British secondary in a remarkable offensive performance.

Adrián Bermúdez Campillos was the standout receiver, earning game MVP honors after scoring three touchdowns, according to the Spanish federation’s game report.

Gonzalo Haro, Jorge Melero, Juan Baró, Eloi Soler and Roque Alarcón also contributed to the scoring as offensive coordinator Óscar Calatayud’s unit kept the British defense under constant pressure.

The defeat was particularly surprising considering Great Britain’s impressive 61–0 victory over Georgia just one week earlier.

Spanish defense dominates

While the offense grabbed the headlines, Spain’s defense was equally impressive.

Under defensive coordinator Ricardo Martín, the visitors repeatedly shut down the British attack, rarely allowing the hosts to cross midfield.

Matteo Cusimano, Julio Aguado and Pablo de Diego recovered turnovers, while Spain’s special teams added further misery for the hosts.

Yago Sánchez and Kim Vilahur recovered kickoffs, helping maintain relentless pressure on Adam Lillis’ young squad.

Georgia next for Spain

The victory gives Spain an ideal start to its Level 2 campaign and its pursuit of promotion to the European Championship’s top tier.

The Spanish team now returns home to face Georgia on Saturday, October 24, at Municipal Oroel in Jaca.

Another victory would put Spain in an excellent position heading into the remaining group fixtures in 2027.
