The visiting Alabama State Hornets (4–3) survived a furious late challenge from the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions (3–3) to escape with a 21–15 victory in an NCAA Division I FCS Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at Simmons Bank Field in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
Despite being outgained 407–226, the Hornets snapped a two-game losing streak behind three rushing touchdowns and a pair of crucial fourth-quarter interceptions.
Howard sparks Alabama State offense
Arkansas-Pine Bluff struck first, building a 6–0 lead on two Trey Glymph field goals before Alabama State finally found its rhythm.
Running back Jareese Howard put the visitors ahead with a touchdown run before breaking loose for a 34-yard score late in the second quarter.
Howard finished with 70 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries, averaging 10 yards per attempt.
Quarterback Aaron Frye completed 15 of 16 passes for 105 yards, including a 58-yard strike to Randall King that helped set up Howard’s second touchdown.
The Golden Lions answered just before halftime when quarterback Jack Schierholz connected with D’Avery Robinson for a touchdown, but a failed two-point conversion left Alabama State ahead 14–12.
Hornets defense delivers when it matters
The Hornets extended their advantage to 21–12 early in the fourth quarter when Jamarie Hostzclaw powered into the end zone from three yards out.
Glymph’s third field goal brought Arkansas-Pine Bluff within six points, setting up a tense finish.
The Golden Lions moved the ball effectively throughout the afternoon, with Schierholz throwing for 243 yards and a touchdown.
Demetric Whitlock Jr. caught six passes for 107 yards, while Robinson added seven receptions for 81 yards and a score.
However, Alabama State’s defense delivered the decisive plays.
