AFC Vienna Vikings rally past Vienna Knights to reach Austrian Football League semifinals

The AFC Vienna Vikings punched their ticket to the Austrian Football League semifinals Saturday, pulling away in a wild fourth quarter to beat the Vienna Knights 36-25 in a hard-fought Wild Card showdown that featured multiple lead changes before the visitors took control late.

The victory sends the Vikings into another all-Vienna postseason showdown next weekend against the Danube Dragons.

Defenses set the early tone

The game began with a much different feel than the dramatic finish.

The Knights struck first, putting together an opening touchdown drive to grab a 7-0 lead in front of their home crowd. The Vikings answered before the end of the opening quarter when Niklas Lechner reached the end zone. A successful two-point conversion gave the visitors an 8-7 advantage after one quarter.

The defenses then took center stage. Both teams tightened up, limiting big plays and forcing difficult possessions. The only points of the second quarter came on a Knights field goal, sending the home team into halftime with a narrow 10-8 lead.

Momentum swings after halftime

Neither offense found much room to operate during the third quarter as both defensive fronts continued to win the battle at the line of scrimmage.

The score remained 10-8 heading into the final period, setting the stage for an explosive finish that looked nothing like the first three quarters.

Vikings finish strong

The fourth quarter quickly turned into an offensive shootout.

The Vikings leaned heavily on their running game, and their offensive line consistently opened lanes for Michael Szabo, Patrick Welte and Matthias Moser. The trio combined to score four rushing touchdowns as the visitors repeatedly answered every challenge.

The Knights refused to go away. Quarterback Chad Jeffries and wide receiver Maximillion Fine kept the offense moving and helped the home side battle back with several key scoring drives as the lead changed hands multiple times.

The decisive moments came on defense. Raylens Boutin picked off two Jeffries’ passes in the closing minutes, ending the Knights’ comeback hopes and allowing the Vikings to run out the clock.

With the 36-25 victory, the AFC Vienna Vikings continue their postseason run and head into next week’s semifinal carrying plenty of momentum. The Vienna Knights, meanwhile, saw an impressive first AFL season come to an end after pushing one of the league’s traditional powers to the limit for four quarters.
