AFI Weekend Watch: Free Small-College Football – Love of the Game Guide for October 3, 2026

There is a perfectly good case for abandoning the Saturday afternoon chase for the billion-dollar version of college football now and then. The game still has plenty of life below the television-money line: community colleges rebuilding rosters every year, NAIA league races, Division II regional bruisers and Division III campuses where the football team is still unmistakably part of the university rather than its own travelling entertainment company.

This week’s five-game AFI slate is not a Dutch heritage tour. Dordt earns its place because No. 16 Midland versus No. 17 Dordt is a proper ranked matchup. The real headline, though, is Wisconsin. UW branch-campus football is absolutely a thing: a whole state system, a proud conference and, in UW-Whitewater against UW-River Falls, a game with the edge and credibility of a major rivalry without the major-college baggage.

All kickoffs below fall between 18:00 and 21:00 CEST. Each link is an official free video route, not a trial, a pirate feed or a request to discover halfway through that the game has migrated behind a paywall.

The five games

18:00 CEST Garden City at Iowa Western JUCO

Iowa Western is 3-1 after its 26-0 loss at Hutchinson, following earlier wins over Highland, Coffeyville and Dodge City. Garden City comes into Council Bluffs for an 11:00 a.m. Central kickoff. This is the junior-college game to sample if you want the annual roster-reset culture in its sharpest form: Iowa Western has made itself one of the country’s serious JUCO programmes and every conference game doubles as a talent shop window.

Why watch

This is a useful reminder that JUCO football is not a novelty act. It is a fast, unsentimental development league where players are playing for a scholarship, a new film clip and, very often, their next country. That makes it especially relevant to an AFI readership looking beyond the obvious U.S. pipeline.

19:00 CEST Marist at Stetson FCS

Marist is 2-2 and 1-0 in the Pioneer Football League; Stetson is 1-3 and beginning its league schedule. The records may not scream national playoff implications, but that is rather the point. The Pioneer is a non-scholarship conference where conference games decide a real, compact season and where a good afternoon can alter the mood of an entire programme.

Why watch

It is the first PFL game for Stetson and a genuine chance for Marist to turn a sound opening month into something more consequential. For a European viewer, the official YouTube broadcast is as straightforward as it gets.

19:00 CEST No. 4 Kutztown at Shippensburg Division II

Kutztown is 4-0, ranked No. 4 nationally and fresh from a 28-18 win over Shepherd. Shippensburg provides the classic Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference setting: a local opponent, a game that feels personal and a road stadium where a ranking does not buy anybody an easy afternoon.

Why watch

Division II is often where a visitor from Europe discovers that the American college game can be both serious and local. Kutztown has national ambitions; Shippensburg has the chance to make its season with one upset. The PSAC’s digital coverage is a very welcome free alternative to the subscription maze.

20:00 CEST No. 2 UW River Falls at UW Whitewater Division III

Here is the main event. Whitewater is 3-0 and has scored 69 points twice. River Falls arrives ranked No. 2. The names can look like a geography lesson to anyone raised on the Big Ten, but that is part of the charm. Wisconsin’s UW campuses are their own football world: public universities, genuine campus crowds and a WIAC standard that requires no apology to anybody.

Why watch

UW-Whitewater versus UW-River Falls is not “small football” in the ways that matter. It is ranked opposition, an early conference statement and a strong test of whether the Whitewater scoring machine can keep its pace when the opponent also has serious pedigree. UWW-TV’s student-produced stream is exactly the kind of homegrown coverage that makes college football feel like a place, not merely a product.

20:00 CEST No. 17 Dordt at No. 16 Midland NAIA

Dordt is 2-2 but arrives with momentum after a 51-21 win at Concordia in which it piled up 579 yards. Midland, ranked one spot higher, gives the Defenders a game that will matter well beyond the customary Siouxland familiarity. This is a ranked GPAC contest, with the winner taking a useful step back into the national discussion.

Why watch

The Dutch cultural connection may be recognizable to readers in the Netherlands, but it is not the reason to turn on. No. 16 against No. 17 is. This is the kind of NAIA game that rewards taking the label seriously: a compact league, established rivalries and teams with everything still in front of them.
