AFI’s All-Europe Team: Linebackers – Darin Hungerford, Kiel Baltic Hurricanes

Another year in the German Football League and another season of statistical domination from Kiel Baltic Hurricanes defender Darin Hungerford.

While the list of impressive linebackers was long, the former NCAA D3 All-American’s speed and ability to shed blocks put him in a prime position to make plays sideline to sideline like few players could.

The 6’, 225-pound defender led the German Football League with 121 tackles in 10 games this past season. Hungerford was the glue holding together the Kiel defense making an impressive 86 solo stops, nine tackles for a loss, three forced fumbles, and recovering two. His play did not go unnoticed by coaches and fans as Hungerford was named to the GFL All-Star team.

Kiel head coach Timo Zorn on what Hungerford meant to his squad:

“Darin brought tremendous leadership on and off the field to an overall young roster. He was the unquestioned leader of the pack and set the tone the moment he stepped into the building. His on-field production is a reflection of his work ethic and the passion he has for the game is second to none.”

The season prior, Hungerford was also one of the GFL’s top defenders, making 155 total tackles on the season, leading the Kiel defense in stops, and finishing fourth in the league.

A native of Dumfries, Virginia, Hungerford came to Kiel after a stellar career at Kean University (NCAA DIII). As a member of the Cougars, he was named a Division III All-American in 2017. Hungerford amassed an impressive 311 total tackles and 21 sacks in his college career.
