AFLE: Berlin Thunder beat Alpine Rams 40-17 to stay in AFLE playoff hunt

The Berlin Thunder (4-4) strengthened their grip on a playoff spot in the American Football League Europe with a convincing 40-17 victory over the Alpine Rams (1-6) on Saturday. The final score was closer than the game itself, as the Thunder controlled the contest through the first three quarters before the Rams added a pair of late touchdowns.

Thunder take control early

The Thunder wasted little time establishing control, dominating both sides of the ball from the opening kickoff. Quarterback Jakeb Sullivan continued his outstanding season, completing 26 of 38 passes for 354 yards and five touchdowns without an interception.

His favorite target was once again Jon Cole, who turned in another spectacular performance with eight receptions for 172 yards and three touchdowns. Bais Kouanda added 10 catches for 112 yards and a score, while Niklas Schumm contributed four receptions for 30 yards and another touchdown as the Thunder piled up 360 passing yards.

The balanced attack also featured an effective ground game. Simon Homadi rushed for 58 yards and a touchdown, Kai Hunter added 50 rushing yards, and Sullivan chipped in 31 more as the Thunder finished with 139 yards on the ground.

Defense sets the tone

While the offense grabbed the headlines, the Thunder defense played another outstanding game.

Kessawn Abraham led the way with six tackles, three pass breakups and an interception as the Thunder consistently disrupted the Rams’ offense. Although Seth Morgan threw for 240 yards and a touchdown, Berlin’s defense limited the visitors’ opportunities during the decisive stages of the game and never allowed them to build sustained momentum.

Kevin Kaya provided the biggest receiving threat for the Rams, hauling in eight passes for 106 yards and a touchdown, while Lucas Davoine contributed 86 rushing yards on 17 carries.

Momentum continues

The victory gives the Thunder back-to-back wins and sends them into their second bye week with confidence before an important showdown against the London Warriors in the battle for playoff positioning.

For the Rams, the rebuilding process continues. Despite showing encouraging flashes late in the game, the visitors were unable to overcome Berlin’s explosive passing attack and disciplined defense.

Looking ahead

With Sullivan and Cole continuing to form one of the league’s most dangerous quarterback-receiver combinations, the Thunder look well positioned for the stretch run.

A strong offensive performance, another productive day from the defense and a comfortable victory keep Berlin firmly in the playoff race as the regular season enters its decisive weeks.
