Allgäu Comets rally past Saarland Hurricanes 26-21 in season finale

The Allgäu Comets (2-10) closed their German Football League season with a win Saturday, battling back from a seven-point deficit to beat the Saarland Hurricanes (2-10) 26-21 at Illerstadion in Kempten.

Comets race out in front

The Comets came out firing in their final home appearance, striking for the game’s first two touchdowns and adding a two-point conversion to jump ahead 14-0.

That fast start briefly opened the door to something bigger. Allgäu needed to erase the 25-point margin from its 46-21 loss in the first meeting to overtake Saarland in the head-to-head comparison.

The Hurricanes, though, quickly settled down. Gabriel Cunningham got the running game moving and broke into the end zone for Saarland’s first touchdown, trimming the gap to 14-7 by the end of the opening quarter.

Saarland flips the game

Cunningham struck again as the Hurricanes erased the rest of the deficit, running in his second touchdown before the extra point tied the game at 14.

Then Joshua Youngblood pushed Saarland in front. His touchdown and the ensuing extra point completed a 21-point swing and suddenly left the Comets staring at a 21-14 deficit.

This time, however, Allgäu had an answer.

The Comets punched in their third touchdown to pull within 21-20, setting up a tight finish at Illerstadion. They then reached the end zone again, reclaiming the lead at 26-21. From there, the Allgäu defense slammed the door, keeping the Hurricanes off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Allgäu finishes with a win

The victory gave the Comets their second win of the season, but the five-point margin wasn’t enough to move them past Saarland in the standings. The Hurricanes retained the head-to-head advantage after winning the first meeting by 25 points, leaving both clubs at 2-10.

For Allgäu, though, the finale offered a much-needed positive finish. After watching a 14-point lead disappear, the Comets responded with the game’s final 12 points and made their last regular-season appearance at Illerstadion a winning one.
