Austria: Danube Dragons hold off Vienna Knights in thrilling AFL showdown

The Danube Dragons (7-1) strengthened their grip on first place in the Austrian Football League with a dramatic 35-33 victory over the Vienna Knights (6-2) in front of 1,450 fans in Donaufeld, surviving a late rally in one of the most entertaining games of the season.

Knights strike first

The visitors wasted no time showing why they entered the game with one of the league’s most dangerous offenses.

Quarterback Chad Jeffries connected with Terrell Ford for an early touchdown, giving the Vienna Knights a 7-0 lead. The Danube Dragons responded thanks to a huge defensive play when Paul Schachner picked off an errant Jeffries pass and returned it for a touchdown, tying the game at 7-7.

Jeffries and Ford hooked up again later in the first quarter to restore the Knights lead, but the back-and-forth battle was only getting started.

Dragons take momentum

Early in the second quarter, Walter Kuhlenkamp found Clemens Harterer for a touchdown to level the score at 14-14.

The Dragons then began to gain momentum. Their defense forced the Knights to punt for the first time all afternoon, and the offense capitalized when Kuhlenkamp connected with Marvyn Acenas for a touchdown and a 21-14 advantage.

The visitors answered just before halftime. With only three seconds remaining, Jeffries led a scoring drive that ended in another touchdown. However, the extra point was blocked, allowing the Danube Dragons to take a narrow 21-20 lead into the locker room.

Big plays decide the game

Defense dominated the early stages of the second half before the Dragons found another breakthrough.

Kuhlenkamp moved the offense downfield and eventually found Samuel Imarhiagbe in the end zone to extend the lead to 28-20.

The Knights refused to go away. Ford scored his third touchdown of the afternoon to cut the deficit to 28-26, but a failed two-point conversion kept the home team in front.

Moments later, Kuhlenkamp delivered one of the biggest plays of the game, hitting Acenas on a long touchdown pass that pushed the lead to 35-26.

Dragons survive late scare

Jeffries brought the Vienna Knights back within two points with a late touchdown and successful conversion, making it 35-33 with 2:44 remaining.

But the Danube Dragons kept their composure. Behind Kuhlenkamp and a controlled offense, they held possession for the remainder of the game and ran out the clock to secure a crucial victory.

Acenas finished with two touchdown receptions, Ford scored three times for the Knights, and the Danube Dragons once again proved why they remain the team to beat in the AFL.
