Austria: Final stats leaders not surprising

With the Austrian Football League regular season finished and the playoffs about to start this weekend, let’s take a look at the final key offensive stats from the 2021 AFL season.

The Projekt Spielberg Graz Giants topped two categories – passing and receiving – making it clear they had the best passing offense in the league in 2021. Meanwhile, it’s obvious that the Dacia Vienna Vikings rely on the run more than any other team with two of the top five rushers in the AFL coming from the Vikings.

Passing

Projekt Spielberg Graz Giants QB Conor Miller led all quarterbacks with 2,170 yards passing while also throwing a league-leading 23 TD passes. He was followed in 2nd by Swarco Raiders QB Sean Shelton with 1,849 yards while Chad Jeffries of the SsangYong Danube Dragons was 3rd with 1,612 yards and 18 TDS. Dacia Vienna Vikings QB Eystin wound up 4th with 1,345 yards while Benjamin Bräuer from the Mödling Rangers finished a distant 5th with 1,047 yards.

Rushing

The Dacia Vienna Vikings were a heavy run team as is clear from Vikings RB Florian Wegan’s league-best 810 yards rushing, more than double that of the 2nd leading rusher, Ladislav Jensik of the Prague Black Panthers who had 391 yards. Vikings QB Eystin Salum was the 3rd best rusher in the AFL with his 350 yards and 9 TDs while Dominik Mattes of the Danube Dragons was 4th with 325 and Rangers RB Nicholas Milgate 5th. He had 323 yards rushing.

Receiving

Darrell Adams of the Graz Giants led the league in receiving yards with 823 to go along with a league-best 11 touchdown passes caught. Dragons WR Philipp Haun was not far behind though with his 799 yards and 9 TDs. Adams’ teammate Florian Bierbaumer was 3rd with 595 yards while Swarco Raiders WR Marco Schneider had 592 yards, good for 4th. Nicholas Milgate of the Mödling Rangers finished 5th overall with 478 yards.
