Austria: Graz Giants claim first win of the season with 35-7 victory over Salzburg Ducks

In a much-needed win, the Graz Giants (1-2) celebrated their first victory of the season by defeating the Salzburg Ducks (1-2) 35-7 at their home opener in Eggenberg. After two narrow losses, the Giants finally found their rhythm and dominated the game.

Giants strike first
The Giants wasted no time getting on the board. Quarterback Bastian Steinmair connected with receiver Julian Kapellari for a touchdown in the first quarter, setting the tone for the game. In the second quarter, Graz doubled their lead with a touchdown from Jakob Begander. The Ducks fought back with an interception by linebacker Andre Blackett Jr., which he turned into a touchdown, narrowing the score. However, just before halftime, new signing Ezra Gray, filling in for the injured De’Queze Fryer, restored the Giants‘ lead.

Second half control
The second half brought heavy rain, making conditions challenging, but the Giants maintained control. Dean Opera broke loose for two impressive runs, including a stunning 87-yard touchdown, sealing the victory for Graz.

Giants head coach Stefan Pokorny expressed pride in his team’s performance, while Ducks head coach Joe Ashfield acknowledged his squad’s struggles. The Giants will look to build on this momentum in their next matchup.
