Austria looks to lock up Group A against Czech Republic

Defending champion Austria (1-0) hosts the Czech Republic (0-1) Sunday at Footballzentrum Ravelin in Vienna with a chance to clinch Group A of the 2026/27 IFAF U19 European Tackle Football Championships and move on to the 2027 medal round.

Austria has not lost at this level since 2011 and has won seven consecutive European championships. One more victory keeps that remarkable run moving forward.

Group A is Austria’s to win

Head coach Florian Grein’s team opened the competition in April by traveling to Spain and coming away with a 17-7 victory.

That result looks even more valuable now. Spain followed the loss by beating the Czech Republic 43-14, leaving Austria in control of the group heading into its second game.

A victory Sunday gives Austria the group outright. Even a narrow loss could be enough to send the Austrians through on point differential, but Grein has made clear his team will not approach the game looking for the minimum required.

Czech Republic brings size and experience

Grein expects a physical challenge from the Czech Republic, particularly from a roster featuring a number of players born in 2007.

“Czechia looks really big and physical, and they also have two strong wide receivers,” Grein said.

Austria, meanwhile, is already working younger players born in 2008 and 2009 into the lineup, giving them international experience before the medal games in 2027.

For some of the older Austrian players, Sunday will also be their final appearance at the U19 level.

An upset would scramble everything

The Czech Republic still has a path to the next round despite its opening loss. An upset would leave Austria, Spain and the Czech Republic tied at 1-1 and send the group to point differential, where Spain’s 29-point victory over the Czechs currently gives it an advantage.

For Austria, the simpler route is sitting right in front of it: win at home, take Group A and keep a European unbeaten streak stretching back 15 years alive.
