Austria: Vienna Knights Edge Graz Giants in Thrilling Season Opener
In a nail-biting season opener, the Speedfit Vienna Knights (1-0) celebrated their debut in the Austrian Football League with a 20-18 victory over the Graz Giants (0-1) at Helfortplatz in Ottakringen. The Knights showcased their potential, but not without a fight from the Giants.
Knights take early control
The Knights jumped out to a commanding 20-0 lead, thanks to touchdowns from Mathias Lechner and quarterback Chad Jeffries in the first quarter, followed by a score from receiver Maximillion Fine in the second quarter. The home crowd was electric, celebrating the Knights’ strong start and potential for their first-ever win in the league.
Giants rally back
However, the Graz Giants refused to back down. Just before halftime, receiver Jonas Dachs-Wiesinger caught a touchdown pass, narrowing the gap to 20-6. After the break, Graz intensified their efforts, with pass catchers Jakob Schneeberger and Georg Pock making significant contributions to the offense. Their efforts paid off as they closed the gap to just two points.
Knights hold on for victory
Despite the Giants’ late surge, the Knights managed to hold onto their slim lead, securing a hard-fought victory. Head coach Ivan Zivko expressed pride in his team’s performance, acknowledging the challenges they faced. Graz head coach Stefan Pokorny congratulated the Knights on their game plan and noted that his team ran out of time in their comeback attempt.
The Knights will look to build on this momentum as they continue their season.
