Mexico: Borregos Monterrey defeat UDLAP Aztecas to win 4th CONADEIP title in 10 years

The Borregos Monterrey grabbed a 24-6 first half lead and then held on to defeat the UDLAP Aztecas 27-13 in Mexico’s CONADEIP (Comisión Nacional Deportiva Estudiantil de Instituciones Privadas) college final this past weekend.

With the win, Monterrey captured their fourth CONEDEIP title in the past decade.

Paced by two first half touchdowns by running back Fernando Mejía, the Borregos were unstopabble in the game’s first two quarters. Quarterback Sebastián Hernández tossed a touchdown pass to Alejandro Betancourt while Leo Guajardo  kicked two field goals. Defensive back Martín Maldonado was named the game’s most valuable player after a stellar performance which included a key interception midway through the third quarter

Borregos Monterrey RB Fernando Mejía scored to second quarter touchdowns to pace his team.

For the Aztecas, running back Kevin Correa scored  a rushing touchdown while quarterback Diego Ruiz threw a touchdown pass to Gerardo Retana to narrow the gap to 27-13 late in the contest.

Betancourt opened the scoring early in the first quarter, hauling in a 31 yard scoring pass from Hernández.

The Aztecas offense struggled with Monterrey making some huge defensive plays including an interception by Rubén Cueva. Then Guajardo added a 29 yard field goal to give Monterrey a 10-0 first quarter lead.

That’s when Mejia went to work scoring on runs of 20 and 11 yards to stretch the lead to 24-0 as the first half was winding down. But UDLAP finally got on the scoreboard late in the second quarter as Correa capped a drive with a six yard scoring run to reduce the lead to 24-6.

The third quarter saw both offenses stymied. Guajardo booted a 22 yarder to make it 27-6 heading into the final quarter.

UDLAP finally found the end zone as Ruiz capped a 47 yard drive with a 13 yard touchdown pass to Retana early in the fourth quarter to narrow the lead to 27-13.

The Monterrey defense did the rest and Borregos Monterrey began celebrating.
