CEFL: Bristol Aztecs dominate Belfast Trojans in shutout victory
The Bristol Aztecs, British champions, turned a highly anticipated Central European Football League first-round matchup against Ireland’s top team, the Belfast Trojans, into a one-sided affair, blanking them 31-0 in a commanding performance. The Aztecs set the tone early, scoring three times in the first half and never looking back.
Strong start for the Aztecs
Running back Josh Breece was the star of the show, showcasing his speed and agility to keep the chains moving. Quarterback Ethan Gretzinger connected with Andrew James Carr on a crossing route for the opening touchdown, putting Bristol up 7-0. The ensuing kickoff took a surprising bounce, allowing Edward Onamade to recover it for the Aztecs. Breece then slalomed through the Trojans’ defense, and Gretzinger found Oliver Luck in the end zone for another score, extending the lead to 14-0.
Defense steps up
Belfast’s offense struggled to find its rhythm. Quarterback Dominic Lynn managed to scramble for a first down, but a fumble caused by Bristol’s Idrissa Forfana ended their drive abruptly. The Aztecs’ defense continued to apply pressure, forcing turnovers and stifling any momentum the Trojans tried to build.
As the first half wound down, Gretzinger connected with Carr again, this time on a screen pass, to make it 21-0.
Second half dominance
After halftime, the Trojans attempted to rally, but their efforts fell short. Breece broke through for a touchdown, pushing the score to 28-0. The Aztecs’ defense remained relentless, forcing another turnover when Uchena Obasi stripped the ball from Lynn, and Josh Ricketts pounced on it.
In the final quarter, Bristol milked the clock, and Gretzinger connected with Max Holland and Luck on key plays, setting up a field goal to cap off the scoring at 31-0.
With this impressive win, the Aztecs now look ahead to their next challenge against the reigning Polish champions, the Warsaw Eagles in the second round on May 16.
