CFL Week 17: Playoff pressure builds as the regular season hits the final stretch

With just five weeks left in the regular season, the race to the 2026 Grey Cup Playoffs is tightening.

The Toronto Argonauts visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Saskatchewan Roughriders head to BC for a pair of Friday night games before the Calgary Stampeders visit the Ottawa REDBLACKS and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats travel to face the Edmonton Elks on Saturday.

Playoff positioning is at stake across the league, while Hamilton is fighting simply to stay alive and Ottawa is still chasing its first victory.

Toronto Argonauts (8-6) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (7-6)

The Argonauts head to Winnipeg Friday after their defense shut down Edmonton when it mattered most last week.

Adarius Pickett piled up 13 defensive tackles, while Toronto held the Elks to one touchdown in six trips to the red zone. The Argos intercepted Cody Fajardo twice in the end zone, and Ralph Holley’s fumble-recovery touchdown provided the decisive points as Toronto clinched a playoff berth and a home playoff game.

The Blue Bombers return from their Week 16 bye after an equally impressive defensive performance in their previous outing. Winnipeg held the Saskatchewan Roughriders to two field goals in the Banjo Bowl and forced five turnovers. Redha Kramdi came away with an interception and forced a fumble.

Both teams are now chasing better playoff position, with Toronto looking toward the top of the East and Winnipeg trying to climb in the West.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-5) at BC Lions (7-6)

Friday’s second game carries major implications in the West.

The Roughriders sit two points ahead of the BC Lions in second place, and the season series is tied 1-1. Saskatchewan won the first meeting 31-27 in Week 2 before the Lions answered with a 30-16 victory in Week 12.

That makes the third meeting the tiebreaker.

BC enters having won six of its last seven and leads the CFL with 427.7 net offensive yards per game. Nathan Rourke powers the passing attack, while Zander Horvath gives the Lions a threat on the ground.

The Roughriders have won two of their last three and counter with a defense allowing 26.2 points per game, the second-lowest mark in the league.

Calgary Stampeders (6-8) at Ottawa REDBLACKS (0-13)

Six days after playing a 40-38 thriller, the Stampeders and REDBLACKS meet again Saturday at TD Place.

Calgary escaped the first game when Rene Paredes drilled a career-long 62-yard field goal as time expired.

For Ottawa, it was another agonizing finish in a season filled with them.

McLeod Bethel-Thompson threw five touchdown passes in his first start for the REDBLACKS, including three to Keelan White. Justin Hardy was targeted 19 times and hauled in 12 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown.

The performance wasn’t enough to prevent Ottawa from falling to 0-13, but the REDBLACKS get an immediate shot at changing the result.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (4-10) at Edmonton Elks (10-4)

For the Tiger-Cats, the situation is simple: beat Edmonton or risk seeing their playoff hopes disappear.

A Hamilton loss combined with a Calgary victory would eliminate the Tiger-Cats. Another combination — wins by Winnipeg and BC, along with a Hamilton loss — would also knock them out.

The Elks return home after having their four-game winning streak snapped by Toronto last week.

Hamilton can spend Saturday watching the scoreboard, but none of those other results matter if the Tiger-Cats take care of their own business.

Win in Edmonton, and they’re still alive for another week. Lose, and the rest of the Week 17 scoreboard could bring their playoff chase to an end.
