Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes Rework Contract To Make NFL History

The Kansas City Chiefs are making it known that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is here to stay.

Despite a season-ending torn ACL at the tail end of 2025, Kansas City isn’t losing any faith in its superstar quarterback. In fact, they’re doubling down.

“Record deal: The Chiefs are adding two years to Patrick Mahomes’ contract, tying him to Kansas City through the 2033 season at a value of $504.75 million, making it the first NFL deal valued at over a half-billion dollars, per (Ian Rapoport) and me,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday afternoon.

Back in 2020, the Chiefs and Mahomes worked out a 10-year, $450 million contract that would have kept the three-time Super Bowl Champion in Kansas City through the 2031 season. Now, the Chiefs are handing the six-time Pro Bowler an additional two years and $54.75 million.

As Schefter noted, this is the first-ever NFL deal that crosses the $500 million mark.

The exact structure of the deal was revealed shortly after, “The new money on the deal is worth $239.05 million, with the total value now at $504.75 million from 2026 through 2033, with the first four years being guaranteed at signing,” Schefter wrote Wednesday. “All $504.75 million becomes guaranteed through contract mechanisms.

Mahomes can make up to $522.25 million through incentives and escalators. Beginning in 2027, when the new money begins, the deal averages $64 million per year, setting an NFL record for average annual value.”

Despite the newly inked contract, Mahomes’ status for the 2026 season is yet to be seen. The organization is currently hopeful that the QB will be ready to suit up in Week 1 against the Denver Broncos, but there has not yet been an official statement.

Roundtable’s Nick Radosevich provided an update on Mahomes’ recovery process earlier this week, which is trending in the right direction.

Neither the Chiefs nor Mahomes has yet to comment on the restructuring, and kept all of the news surrounding the deal under wraps until it was official.

The repercussions of this historic contract will be a storyline to follow, as the Chiefs have now invested an average annual value of $64 million into the QB(beginning in 2027), potentially limiting future signings or trades as the franchise nears the salary cap.

Regardless, this is a move that shows commitment to the greatest QB that Kansas City has ever seen, and locks down a potential future Hall-Of-Famer for an additional two years– into Mahomes’ age-35 season.

Between a new stadium in the coming years, and this newly structured deal, Kansas City is in a great spot for the next half-decade at minimum.
